Do I still count as a libertarian? * 1

I still think that the government should be downsized drastically but I think that the government should still have a military, create roads, and parks.

I think that there should be property tax since you're paying them for a service they provide. (Protection and defense)

Basically all my views on everything else fall in place with libertarians.

Am I still considered a libertarian or something else?

Of course.  Libertarians are not anarchists and L. Ron Paul does not define libertarianism.  He defines jackassism.

Sure you are. There are many degree's of libertarianism, not just one strict doctrine. For instance some libertarians that are essentially anarcho capitalists think EVERTYHING should be privatized, including the military. Personally i am a libertarian and i think the government should be large enough to protect the individual from cohesion of others, so police, military, etc. Roads i'm split on, I'm leaning towards private industry at this point, i think they would do a better job at it. And I'm fine with government owned parks but think they should be privately run. And there are huge swaths of land owned by the federal government (particularly in the west) that i think should be privatized.

You guys that want deregulation should check out some countries that have little regulations. Once you see it and live it, you'll understand that laws, and regulations, building codes, clean air, these things are what separate third world countries and first world countries.

Don't mean to derail the thread, but, as much as I admire libertarian thought, and I do, the effect could be less desirable.

Some regulations are reasonable.  Some are bureaucrat overreach.  Where do you draw the line?

I think most complaints would best be handled in torts court.

Libertarian does not intrinsically mean no regulation whatsoever. It just means smaller government. Less regulation for sure, but that doesn't mean zero regulation.

The vast majority of libertarians and conservative have no problems with funding things like law enforcement and fire-fighting. Most of us don’t have a problem with making sure our water is clean and our meat is healthy. And many of us even think public schools are OK!
But these are not the only things that government does. They are not even a majority of what the government does.
A lot of what the government does is either unnecessary (if we’re lucky) or damaging (if we’re not). It pays out hundreds of billions in transfer payments every year. It pays employees generous salaries and extravagant benefits for which we are now on the hook to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. It uses asset forfeiture to seize people’s property without trial because they might be dealing drugs. It uses eminent domain to force people to sell their property to rich developers. It fights unnecessary wars. It fights a stupid and devastating War on Drugs. It shovels tens of billions into corporate welfare and tax exemptions to favored businesses. It seizes well-cared-for children because their parents have a little pot.
I have no problem giving government money to do the things that government needs to do. But no one should be willing to just throw money into the equivalent of a wishing well in the hope that, somehow somewhere, it might be spent wisely.

then it sounds like you have some strong libertarian leanings :billymaythumbup: good for you. The media has done a pretty fantastic smear campaign against libertarians, they paint them all as anarchists /corporate apologists. I suggest looking more into actual ideals behind the movement, you'll find a lot more you like i promise.

Libertarians are ignorant simply on the ground that they believe tyranny stops with goverment, and that the private sector is basically Jesus fucking Christ. Most the libertarians that I've encountered are completely clueless of history, even the history of the word they call themselves. Don't drink the cool-aid OP.

as i've already stated in this thread there are many stripes/degrees of libertarian. Can you quote any text where a self proclaimed libertarian has stated this?

I don't have to. It's the entire philosophy of the Libertarian party, at-least the ones who hold seats of power. If you disagree, and distance yourself from them, then that is a different story.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Yeah, these are things most rational people believe. Too bad Libertarian politicians just use that platform as a means to power, which they use to benefit their own companies and restrict women's rights and gay rights.


The party slogan should be Freedom for ALL (unless you're not a successful white business owner)

If I run a restaurant and choose not to let women and gays eat (or work) there, how would a true libertarian feel about that?

very few libertarians actually hold seats of power. Can you name a few politicians you think are libertarians?
