"To Catch a Contractor" -- with Adam Corolla
    #19665352 -

So adam corolla has a new show where he helps people who have been screwed over by contractors (home repair/maintenance) and (a) exposes the fraud, and (b) makes the contractor come back and fix it.

sadly im sure its all staged, but i wish it wasn't.  great idea for a show

Yeah that sounds pretty good, but you're right it's probably staged.

I know more than one person who has been taken for five figures by shady contractors. I just can't imagine giving that much money to someone before the job is complete, once the money changes hands your power is pretty much gone. If you can't afford the materials for the job before I pay you, you're not a good enough contractor to be working on my property.

Dafuq?

It is a rarity that contractors buy materials for a job with their own money.

Usually some sort of account is set up.

Contractor's have to protect themselves as well, we're not going to go drop $10,000 on shit just to have you change your mind, fuck that.

There is a UK show called "Cowboy Builders" which has the same premise.

Bring back "to catch a predator"

Every contractor I know buys materials in bulk and has leftovers from other jobs they can use. If the job requires custom flooring or something I would insist on paying the invoice for it directly, and demand that it all be kept on site in case he gets sped or drunk and bails. No fucking way would I write a check or transfer money to a contractor who can't start the job without five figures down, signed agreement or not. An escrow account could be acceptable as long as my lawyer looked over the terms and gave a green light. Contractors are far more likely to burn customers than the other way around.

Yeah, we keep lumber, drywall, electrcal and plumbing supplies, and other basic stuff... But we don't usually keep a surplus of stuff like cabinets, toilets, showers, special order stuff, etc...

And Idk, just don't deal with shady contractors. Myself or any company I have ever been a part of have never scammed anyone. Getting material money and a deposit before we start jobs is standard practice and I can't recall any time a customer has had a problem with that.
