dumb ass contractor, im going to have to fire him...
    #10456356 -

so, heres the deal.

im re-habbing my house, and ive been hiring out most of the work as of lately, 2 of the things on the list were carpeting and a roof repair..

so ive been getting quotes from all sorts of people,
and then this one guy showed up, found my job on CL

anyways,

dude needs me to give him directions to my house, which i think most people could have looked up online.... i mean he did find my job online so i know he has internet...

so he gets here, and he works me up a quote for the job 75% below everyones price. really cheap.... he works up this quote on crayon... a fucking red crayon.

so i tell him he can do the carpet and we'll see how it goes, then ill decide about the roof.

so he shows up to do the carpet, and all of his tools were new outta the box, or in the box...
tape measure, staple gun... i mean, he didnt even own these..... wtf was up with that...

then he goes to put in my carpet, and fucks up the new paint job.... said that the tack strip was so close to the wall, that he could not avoid hitting it. he fucked up like 20 feet of fresh paint, hitting the wall with a hammer...
'
it took me 2 seconds to grab a floor plank, and say, ""use this to shield the wall"

i mean, how are you so fucking daft that you dont actually correct a problem like that....

and this guy wants to actually get up on my steep ass roof and do work?

sorry dude, its worth me paying several hundred dollars more to have someone do the fuckng job right and not die...

i mean... damn.

I wouldn't really know what I'm doing either. Then again, I'm not trying to sell myself as a contractor.

That probably happens a lot over craigs list. I remember the good ol' days when strangers would come rapping on your door offering to aerate your lawn for a negotiable price.

you didnt expect to do touch ups on the fresh paint when you
were having someone do flooring work? it's not uncommon
regardless, painter should apply a first coat, flooring guys
should be in, then trim work and then a second coat

When I did commercial flooring, the painters always finished before we got in.  I'm sure they had to touch up a little (probably bitched about it), but the again, those fuckers always left mountains of shit on the floor (paint, mud, etc) that we had to grind off. /rant

Don't get me started about the concrete guys... :grrr:

hey now...

I did engineered cements, the stuff the concrete guys screwed up
I had to go fix, imagine having to grind down all the ramps on a
6 level parking deck because they floated the concrete the wrong
way and left large humps, seems it's not too uncommon when they
bring in cheap unskilled illegal labor, after the grinding I had
to mix and pour cement by hand for all of it, it added almost
$200k to the cost, seems they might have saved a little if
they'd had skilled labor from the start

everyone in atlanta  has always touted mexicans as being the
best masons and concrete people for so long it seems they
thought is was genetic so they'd hire them basedon the fact that
they were mexican (or just hispanic) and because they worked cheaper

some of the stuff I've seen on these job sites was just crazy, on
one building there were columns that tipped forward and backward
because they never used a level or a plum line, I've seen walls
fall because they didnt tie them into anything or blocks that
were stacked straight up instead of staggered on each course

there's a lot of great stone and brick masons that come out of
mexico, but most of the guys that can do the work dont get hired
because they want a fair price, my uncle is an excellent mason,
contractors would get pissed because he looked mexican and spoke
no spanish, that cost him several jobs

That is crazy though, seems like there are always more problems when contracting companies choose cost over experience

It gets scarier when you see it in places you really shouldn't. Years ago I was working with some east European contractor named "Yevo" as a laborer.

Our responsibilities that day were pretty simple, get the breaker panel, wire up a few rooms get the boxes in etc. This twat had such little understanding of the electrical code that every single job he did (except for one single outlet) was not up to snuff. To top it all off after I told him about it and re-did his work he had the nerve to bitch me out at the end of the day for "wasting time" and that "no one would even be able to know".

Needless to say the day after we parted ways, I can't stand working for someone who is incompetent but its even worse when they're incompetent to the point of violating building codes and creating fire hazards.

Also...not withstanding the occasional prick who wasn't considering any other job but his, most masons and brick layers etc are pretty clever/nice guys for the most part.

I made a thread in OTD about a guy I'm working with, he's the
contractor, anyway he's OK with electricals but there's a lot of
stuff he's just clueless on, we were installing a bathroom in an
old utility/laundry room, bust the concrete, run the pipes, set
the shower, drywall, level the floor, paint, tile, etc...

I was out sick a couple of days and he 'leveled' the floor by
using portland cement, I got there the morning after he did it
and immediately knew I'd have to redo it, he mixed it really
stiff, there were a few large humps and it simply didnt bond to
the old floor, I walked across it and it started cracking in the
thin spots, I called him and he was liek "it should have bonded"
I explained why it didnt and what was needed and told him I'd be
at lowes to meet him in a few minutes, we got back and ripped up
the old stuff and even after I explained a second time at lowes
he kept insisting it should have been fine because it was so
thick, portland cement shrinks when it dries, when it shrinks it
pulls away from the substrate, anyway it took an hour to undo his
mess and another to do it right, no real loss other than cost of
materials and a little time

nearing job completion we had a set of bifold doors, 6 foot
span, he tries fitting the first door and it's 1/2" too tall, he
goes outside, lops a little off the bottom, a little off the top
and brigs it in, there's a wave across the top and it looks like
shit and he starts to panic, I told him not to worry, I could
fix it, I tols him to take what ever is needed off the bottom
only with the next door, he didnt listen, claimed they had to
match so he needed to do the same thing, he went out, did it his
way and for some strange reason he go the same results

now he's really panicking because it's looking like the ocean,
he takes the doors out, nails the pieces he cut off back on the
top and for some reason it doesnt look right, well DUH... he's
all panicked becasue it's cutting into his pocket to buy new
doors, I keep reassuring him that I can fix them and he's still
flipping out, I spend 30 minutes with a planer and sander on the
top and flatten things back out, trim a little off an edge on
the bottom of one and hang them and they look great

back down the hill we go, he take a roller to the wood grained
doors and makes them look like shit again, he's a nightmare to
work with, cant hang or finish drywall, uses the cheapest crap
for watered down primer and then blames the paint when stuff
shows through, caulks everything that's supposed to get painted,
corners and stuff on the walls and ceiling and expects a perfect
cut in on a 1/4" radius, wants to paint trim after it's
installed instead of just touching up afterward

if he'd started listening beforehand it would have saved a week
of work, meant less clean up and been a much nicer finished product
