anyone try using buckwheat?
    #19659268 -

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried using buckwheat, for either a spawn grain, or a substrate or additive/etc? The stuff grows like crazy, and my bees would probably love it. it is also a great cover crop. so.... anyone?

hmm...don't know specifically what this means....but it looks like some in fact have.

http://tr.pinterest.com/pin/178455203957580757/

however also found a post from a grower that said this:
" Posted 02 December 2006 - 10:01 PM
i got some buckwheat and soaked it overnight. the groats absorb water well but there is a slimey snot-like substance left over that is hard to wash off. then the groats are easy to smash w/ finger pressure and soft. inside is sort of dry powdery flour like.

in short, i think the buckwheat groats are a bust as a grain medium. "

and then yet again maybe we have the reasons for that, and someone else trying it and them saying it works great (This is evidently for actives though, not sure about using it for edibles which is all I want to use it for, personally :http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7169850

"According to my experience, buckwheat tends to soak much water. That's the reason why people get squash when boiling jars. I got it too when tried make buckwheat the same way as usual wheat. After that I tried another way. I washed cereal in running tap water in the colander for a few minutes, then put into the pot and addehttp://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7169850d a little water. When cereal soaked it I added a little again, then again, checking cereal once per half an hour. When the grains got notably turgid (but still hadn't free water) I put it into jars and PCed..
Summary, preparation of buckwheet is quite a bother, though harvest pleases if you do things carefully. "

hmmm....my guess would be not worth the effort, though I have already thought about growing buckwheat for my bees, so if I do, then I'll have the grain for free. but still wondering if anyone has actually done it to verify.

I'm pretty sure buckwheat isn't actually a grain, but I'm not sure if that would be of any consequence with using it LIKE a grain.

It is soft inside especially when soaked, we used to add it to rice back when we were eating rice.

I do not know if it is not by some technicality or something, but as far as I know it most certainly is. and it is decembers 'grain of the month' by the whole grain counsel....so those dudes should know. I mean they have whole grain in their title and everything.... buckwheat is actually some seriously awesome stuff, from what I've seen.

It's often regarded as a grain because it can be used similarly, but it's technicly not a grain.  Which is great! It's the seed of a fruiting plant.  It would be funny to call buckwheat a whole grain, because it lacks a husk or germ, and it's not a grain! The article you referenced there even says it's not a grain and mentions how ironic it is that they're naming a non-grain as grain of the month.

Either way, good on you for researching it's usefulness in mycology.  It could probably be used as supplement, if not as a grain substitute.

I'm sure you could process the straw from buckwheat with the right equipment.  The bee's will do well its an important nectar and pollen crop.

Ya bees love the stuff. though I am not a total fan of buckwheat honey. a bit strong for me, I like fruity honey, and sometimes mint honey. But they'll get a lot of honey out of buckwheat if they can.

I like your sigpic btw. I was recently looking at a bucket grow I did and wondering if I actually did well or not relatively. I harvested, so far on the first flush from two clusters (And still have one cluster waiting to see if it aborts or not.) 3.78 lbs. so if that place claims 'up to 3 lbs for their fungipail..... well, I feel more comfortable now. and still hope to have a 2nd and 3rd flush.

I'm using buckwheat right now to recultivate a 6 y.o. spore print of the Fairy Fatass strain, and I immediately noticed its advantages over brown rice.

1. To hydrate rice, you have to cook it for a while and then remove the excess water by drying it. None of that is necessary with buckwheat. I just put it in the plastic bottle I used to wash it, left it soaking in cold water for a couple of hours (I got distracted and forgot about it tbh) and it was fully hydrated. Then made 5 holes in the bottle cap, turned the bottle upside down, and left it like that overnight. The next day, it was ready for sterilization.

2. Rice is still a relatively hard grain, so mycelium grows more slowly. It usually took about 1-2 weeks before I could spot any growth. With buckwheat, I saw the first signs of growth after just 4-5 days in all of my jars.

Looks pretty cool for 6th day of an old print

Why don't you try using buckwheat and sharing the results with us? Do a side by side with whatever grain you nromally use.

Alas, I didn't do a brown rice jar this batch for a side-by-side experiment. It didn't even cross my mind.

Sadly, 3 of the 6 buckwheat jars in this batch, the bigger ones, were contaminated at the inoculation sites with a pink goo. The other half, including these 2 small jars, are looking good on day 12. Haven't break-and-shaken them, though.

Contams happen. I think I threw out over 100lbs of substrate last week :facepalm3:

Otherwise those jars are looking good
