Girl, 5, makes bong in class
By EDITH BEVIN
September 29, 2003

A five-year-old Territory girl shocked teachers when she showed her class how to make a bong out of a Coke bottle during a ``show and tell'' session.

The incident took place at a primary school in Darwin's northern suburbs.

The revelation comes amid mounting concerns over drug use among Territory primary school students.

At least two instances have been reported to the Education Department of children aged between five and 12 being caught with drugs at school.

In one case the drug was amphetamine. Teachers have indicated this may be the tip of the iceberg.

``The little girl showing how to make a bong was the most in-your-face example of drug culture among primary school students I've heard of,'' one teacher said.

``It's not unheard of that primary school children will be found with drugs at school,'' the teacher said.

``Usually it's just a bit of dope _ they've probably nicked it from their mum's purse and brought it along to show off.

``I've never heard of dealing at a primary school here.''

But dealing at Territory schools is not unheard of, police say.

The NT Drug Enforcement Unit has run operations at high schools targeting dealing on school grounds.

Police would not name the schools involved.

The Northern Territory News has learned a member of the NT Police has been seconded to the Education Department to work on their new drug policy and protocols.

``The drug education policy is under revision to ensure it accurately reflects modern trends,'' the spokesperson said.

Students with drugs at school are reported to the school-based constable and are subject to suspension.

A Department of Education spokesman said students being found with drugs at Territory schools was rare.

The spokesman said prosecutions against students are not always pursued.

``Depending on the incident, the constable may refer the matter to the police for further action,'' the spokesman said.

``Usually, the student involved would be suspended for a period determined by the school, taking into consideration the seriousness of the incident.

``The student would also receive counselling and would be required to successfully undertake a re-entry interview before returning to the school once the period of suspension has passed.''

Blame operation pipedreams. If you could still go to a head shop and buy a bong, then you wouldn't need to learn how to make one.

> whats wrong with theses people

Parents spending too much time smoking and not enough time being parents, perhaps?

holy shit

why does everyone judge her parents right away!!!!!

maybe she just , SAW it, kids pick up things you know, sheesh

you guys act like you have never asked a 5 year old girl to make to a quick bong(hehe)

seriously, I dont see this as so bad, and if her parents didnt tell her to do this, FINE, if they got the idea ready for her, told her how and said

"good luck" thats different, but still I saw someone say "lock them up for life" holy fuck WHY?, bad judgement but still life, this girl "needs" parents , even if they are a couple of burnouts

TOBACCO SMOKE, around CHILDREN is different I my opinion and people treat it like it nothing!!!!!

dont smoke(cannabis)in front of your kids at......(an age to be judged by YOU)but tobacco is SICK

people who do that should at least get a slap and a free book on health

Hmm.. im thinken that regardless of legality its a little young to be using mind altering drugs. Your mind really isnt developed at that age, also, any smoking you do do will be at the suggestion of an older individual and not really so much a free choice of the child. In conclusion, whoever taught this child to make a bong kidna deserves whatever comes from this incident cause a five year olds minda aignt ready for that stuff and a five year old aint ready to make decisions about that stuff.

Because parents are ultimately responsible for their children. Regardless of where the child picked it up, the parents are at fault. They should know where she is spending her time, and what she is doing. We are talking about a five year old here, not a teenager.

wow thats amazing.. i think parents have alot to do with it though. think about it, they don't show how to make a bong on T.V.... the girl probably saw family or friends .. older family or friends, making it... its actually quite sad.

The kids are all doin that in the states too! I think the principle might have been dealing too, they'd go into the health office and come out with speed!

I dunno, but that is one smart girl. At age five I was still having trouble with my shoelaces. This girl obviously grasps the objective, mechanics, and purpose of a bong.

She should be involved with Nasa or something.

Nah, creative expression is killed by schools to prevent people from learning to think on their own.  By the time she gets out of trouble from this she will probably never think on her own again.  :frown:

i think the real issue is the child being able to bring a sharp object to class so she can poke the hole for the carb and the tubing out... what irresponsable parents...
