shiitaki bag
    #19623471 -

hey guys!
so this is my first shiitaki bag, have only done shiitaki one time previously, but it was a brf cake and only got me enough to make 1/2 plate of stir fry.

the bag is hydrated fuel pellets (5 cups dry i think it was), after it expanded i added a handful of hydrated cherry chips (poured boiling water on dry chips, let soak 8 hours) and maybe a tablespoon of wheat bran, mixed evenly, no dripping at all.  PC'd 2 hours 15 minutes, bag was closed RR style with tyvek/tri fold.  nocced up with 1 cup colonized rye grain.  when i took the bag out of pc the cherry chips were way more red looking.  here is the bag now.  it was nocced up on the 16th.

here are the wood ships i used (i know they are expensive but all i had access to besides going outside and i wasn't sure what kind of wood is being used in our park)  also please excuse the dog's curiosity.

my question is, when u look at the bag, u can see red near the myc growth in parts.  is that just the chips being digested or maybe some color leaking out of them?  or is it a contam?  it does not look like lipstick to me, but again, i have never done shiitaki other than a brf cake.  its colonizing in room at 69 degrees right now.
thx in advance!

"rockon"
thanks man!  i was gonna just PM u that instead of post, but i figured u were on here anyway.  i was wondering, do wood chips count as a supplement?  meaning, if u just did pasteurize in bag fuel pellet tek with hydrated wood chips, would u need a sterile place to g2g it?  like a hood or SAB?  or treat it the same as pasteurized pellets alone, and spawn in open air?

They don't count as a supplement per se, but you may have to be a bit more careful.  Fuel pellets harbor little to no contams in them because of the way they're processed into pellets (heat/pressure kills everything) so you can get away with anything with just them.  Adding wood chips introduces another vector of possible contamination, but no it's not like adding bran, I don't think.  Maybe boil the wood chips for a while to kill most of what's on them?  Then combine with pellets and I'd say open air would probably be ok.

Then again, I've never used chips myself so maybe someone else has a better answer/method!

The heavy white rings around the red spots may indicate the myc surrounding and walling off contaminates.  Next time try it without the cherry chips.  Shiitake will not grow on fruit woods.

oh no!! not good.  are you sure about the cherry?  i thought they could grow on all hardwood (or most hardwood?).  i will leave out the wood chips next time if this is true.

im gonna keep it a few more days before i make any decisions.  i have seen a variety of contaminants in jars, but not so experienced with bags of wood dust/chips. closest thing it  looks like to me is lipstick mold, but its not even that color in the bag as far as i can tell.

edit: just checked again.  no metabolites (maybe too soon?) and no "line of resistance" from myc coming up on a contam, but like i said, never done shiitaki bags.

You could be right, but I see that all the time on my blocks (not just shiitake) and they usually seem to turn out fine

Either way, don't go tossing 'em or anything, just wait and see what they do.
