Oops. I guess wood can contaminate.
    #1454991 - 04/13/03 04:13 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I had some quart tubs (plastic) of aspen shavings and hickory chips that I had boiled for an hour, and loaded into the tubs with my bare hands in open air.

I broke up some BRF cakes that I had colonized with Stropharia, and spawned the tubs with it.

The mycelium is starting to take off, but today I see green spots with white rims growing inside.

What should I do?

Could take pieces of Healthy Mycelium and transfer to agar and throw away to rest, or remove the Green patches and put salt on it, if it is Trich. Also, Spray with H202 Immediatly in my opinion

I have it on agar already. 6 Plates from 6 out of 8 innoculation points. Each of the 8 tubs were from a different point.

I was going to use each tub as spawn for an outdoor bed then clone fruits from the best beds.

I guess I should just scrap the tubs, or maybe bury them outside.

I'm not too familiar with Stropharia species, but if you are going to grow outdoors just cut the bad spots off and go with it. Especially if the substrate you were planning on using is not pasteurized!

Try bringing the chips to a boil turn them off let them sit an hour drain then repeat. You'll leach out more of the nutrients and its less likely to contaminate. Also try spawning to heavy one gallon or quart pastic bag with movable closure. Close the bag and poke some holes with a paring knife or nail on the top and bottom of the bag. Then put the bag of substate in a paper bag. I think if its closed up in plasic container the wood is more likely to contaminate. I used grain spawn SR and mulberry chips with bare hands open air and did not contaminate.

Keep growing.
