The calory indicator on a treadmill
    #19624206 -

How accurate are they in your opinion?
I typically run outside or around a track but felt uninspired today and decided to give the treadmill a whirl.

At a moderate up and down pace for about an hour it claimed I burned a lot of calories..
I felt alright getting off it but didn't feel nearly as exerted as I would have from an hour on the track/outside.

So is the calory indicator on a treadmill ballpark-accurate even when you don't punch in any personal stats about yourself?

I'd guess they're entirely inaccurate.  However, they may have some use in comparing one workout to another.

For example the calorie counters on the treadmills at my gym ask for age and weight.  I'm stocky with more of a "bodybuilder" type physique, so I'd imagine my caloric expenditure is much different than say, a tall, lean woman with a "beanpole", marathon-type body.

They're worthless for ACTUAL count, as in they won't get you anywhere near the actual number... but they're good for reference from one workout to the other.

My advice? Get outside and stop counting the calories. Running on a treadmill is about as mundane as it gets. How people do it, I don't know... much prefer to run in a forest trail.

I'm not a huge runner, but the main reason I like a treadmill is its easier to push myself.  When I run outside, I instinctively slow down as I begin to fatigue.  On a treadmill, I keep up or I fall.

It's also easier to compare workouts and gains/losses, as well as providing a safer, more forgiving run, the deck is even and has an amount of "give" to it to make it easier on the body.

Man there is no way running on a treadmill is easier on your legs/knees than running on grass/dirt though. Concrete is nasty stuff to run on though, so if you mean that, then yeah.

Running in place is nothing like running outside, it is much harder to keep going outside. Especially if you do things like hill sprints or running at steep hills, the intensity of the exercise will always be higher outside than inside IMO.

You might be able to force yourself to run a bit harder, but that doesn't mean its better for you to do. I've always taken to the idea that the body knows when it needs a breather. During long runs I'll stop to walk for a minute, get my breath and then chug along. Don't see why I should force my CNS to overwork itself.

Nothing beats running outside in nice weather either with the sun or stars beaming on you :nyan:
