Re: Treadmill running. [Re: eligal]

Yeah sorry for my tangents, back to running.

Running barefoot has 4x less impact on the body than running shod according to a new Harvard study.

Run barefoot on grass, but make sure you are striking the ground with the ball of your foot (or middle) NOT the heel.  The heel strike many runners use because they have padded shoes is what leads to lots of injury.

The arch of your foot is a spring so you can store the energy of impact and use it for propulsion.

Running with shoes and using a heel strike is saying that 50 years of R&D into shoes is better than 4 billion years of evolution.

Your foot is meant to run without shoes (or minimal ones at that).

Look at this slow motion sprint video, his heels never even touch the ground, he is always striking on the middle of the foot and bouncing off.

Sorry its in french, lol.

n e evidence?
and on the slim chance you do post a video or something... you're telling me kettlebells are what got you that strong?

Just read that to yourself a few times. You don't even run, and you bet you can beat someone at it who trains in it every day cause of your kettlebells. What does running "better" mean? Unless you DO run all the time, and you just didn't mention it. hah.

I'm not posting pictures of me, let alone a video on a mushroom forum, sorry.

And yes, the past 6 months that I've had kettlebells I've had an intense progress compared to my other heavy lifting that I did before this. And yes, I do run on the rare occasion. I can run 8 miles without stopping now, the kettlebells are EXTREMELY vigorous, I feel MORE tired after a 20 minute session than an hour long 8 mile run.

I don't think you even understand how hard a kettlebell workout is.

Keep on laughing, I really don't give a shit, when it comes to it, I could out run you and my strength is explosive compared to you. So keep laughing. I'll laugh even harder.

And he won't, until he picks one up and tries to swing it for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off.

Then he'll know.  And then he'll sound as brainwashed as us.

I see. I just still don't get how swinging around a 50lb ball is somehow going to increase a big lift where you're dealing with over twice as much weight at least... kind of how, going from 50 to 60 pushups isn't really going to make my benchpress higher... but increasing my benchpress 10-20lbs usually got me pumping out more pushups.I'm not comparing kettlebell exercises to pushups, just saying that it's kind of unconventional/expensive to "increase weights" on these exercises. Maybe I'm just biased, but I've always seen in increase in weight as a more measurable form of progress than an increase in reps/intensity/length (which is what I'm assuming you do with kettlebells, as I guess people here only tend to own one or two of). The reason I believe this, is cause... say I'm doing some fairly high rep circuit training... I might be faster/have done more than a few days ago, but deep down, I may have just been trying harder than last time. Weights for me have been more honest. It's like, 3 weeks ago I KNOW that weight was physically impossible for me to lift, and now I use it for 3 reps... Just wanted to explain why I'm skeptical about them. Don't waste your time explaining why I'm wrong, I totally understand how I could be.

Anyways, even though I'm skeptical, I should really pick one up and try before arguing.  I really didn't mean to derail this thread so much, I just thought suggesting kettlebells in a thread where a guy just wanted to ask about running form was kind of weird.... but I guess if they've truly helped your running progress more than running itself, why not.

Because that 50lb ball is being SWUNG, which emits greater force.  Especially when the bell is being swung WITH INTENSITY (pushing it down with the lats, snapping it up with the hips).  That's just with two hands.  Take away one of them and do one-armed swings and suddenly that 53lb (24kg) kettlebell feels like a whole lot more.

Forget about swinging it - imagine the force needed to throw that 53lb bell from back between  your legs to a full lockout above your head.  Then do it repeatedly for 15 seconds on, 15 seconds off --- i guarentee you'll want to die.

In a little over a year, I have gone from not being able to press 16kg over my head (not even once), to being able to press 24kg over my head well over 20 times in a workout.  That is damned good.

About one year ago I was out for 2-months because I tried snatching the 16kg.  I can now snatch the 24kg with ease.

Weight increases happen with KBs too, they just don't need to happen as frequently because there are so many ways to up the intensity with your current bell.

Fo' sho'.  Give it a try - cant hurt   Check out some youtube videos first though so you can be sure to have the right (general) form.  Improper form with KBs = super injury.

Make sure you watch my video on running!

Heel striking will give you pain and problems!

Running barefoot with a middle foot or front foot impact is what you need!

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

I actually did watch that video, and really enjoyed it.  I ran barefoot one day - and unfortunately for me i live in the city.  I landed on the palm of my foot and a rock was under the main pad.  As a result I got a GIANT blood blister and it has been a few weeks and it's still visible (but just stopped hurting two days ago).

You're right about that impact shit.

I would like to point out:

it is much easier running on the middle or front of the foot if one is sprinting because of the forward lean.

If someone is jogging at a leisurely pace, their posture will be more upright and back making heel striking fairly inevitable, or at least difficult to avoid.

Running naked with a middle foot or front foot impact is what he really needs.
