 a couple dumb questions

1. perlight what is it's legal usage and what store can i get it from...not places on-line just plain stores. the reason i am asking it's legal useage is because chances are i am going to need help finding it and if the person at the store asks what it is for i don want to look at the and say uh...mushroom growing and smile.
2.vermiculite i got the same problem with this one....where and what it's legal use is for
3. my last question is that i don't have a PC so i am going to use the nuker how long should i nuke the honey water for and how long should i nuke the vermiculite for. I was going to just guess but than i read about the honey carmilizing and i don't want to kill anything on the vermiculite that will help the mushi's to grow so i figured i would ask.

vermiculite is non-nutritious anyways so dont worry about hurting it, and i dont know how far u will get without a PC but i could be wrong.. i dont think you will ever be able to use the PF tek without one. am i right?

perlite is a soil additive that helps retain water.
you mix it with potting soil for flowering plants or some such.
home depot, wal-mart, and any local garden store should have it.
and dont even worry about them asking you what you need it for, wont happen...its that common of an item.
vermiculite is likewise a soil additive, as the bag says "helps losen compact soils". its likewise found at the same stores perlite is. once again, its not an uncommon item, and ive bought many bags without even so much as an awkward glance.
lastly, if you're at all serious about this hobby, you will come up with the 15-20 bucks to buy a mirro or uhm, whatever that other wal-mart brand of pressure cooker is. they're small, i dont think you can really do pint+ jars, but half-pint is fine. and it will be one of the best investments you make in this hobby.
as for the honey water, ive no idea, ive not done it personally...so i wish i could help you there.
verm is supposedly sterile right out of the bag, since it goes into the bag at 600+ degrees or some such. but lots nuke it or pc it anyway, pc @ 15 psi for 60 min, nuke for 5 min, stir, nuke for another 5. that should sterilize it pretty well. but once again, if you do brf with verm, i dont think its advisable to nuke it. someone might say differently, but i would be afraid of cooking the substrate.

believe me i want a PC very very VERY badly but i (at this point) don't want to raise any eyebrows with the people i live with. I mean if you knew me at all and than all the sudden i am buying all kinds or weird things. I am going to be using a mycobag so i figured once it is colonized but befor it pins i will dunk it and verm it and put in my grow chamber and wait. maybe i will just go get a PC and tell my roomates i have taken up a new hobbie of cooking? like they will believe that, but thnx for the advice

sure thing littlejohn, what we're here for =)
and if you enjoy fresh jams and jellies, you could easily tell your roommates that you do have a new hobby =) with some fresh fruits and some jars and a pc (what do you know, close to our hobby), you could do both and no one would be the wiser.
but a mycobag would probably be the best way to go, lacking a pc. some say steam boiling works for pf jars, but i cant vouch for it.

well to paint a picture of the kinda guy that i am...i am 20 years old and my biggest hobby right now is weight lifting (250 5'11) I do eat alot...lol but i am not to quick in the kitchen i will figure somthing out though, thnx again for the support

and this... i don't want to kill anything on the vermiculite that will help the mushi's to grow ... what are you talking about? what tek are you using? have you read the FAQ?
as far as perlite and vermiculite... they're common soil additives and no one will give you a second glance for asking about them. if they do ask, tell 'em it's for making a potting soil mix.

the protein idea is a great one, i can't believe i didn't think of it but it is a great idea and " i don't want to kill anything on the vermiculite that will help the mushi's to grow" as far as to what that ment well i was't sure why it helped the mushrooms to grom i figured it was loaded with Vitamins and i know from my research into protein that heat...i.e. pressure cooking it would break them down and render them useless but now that i know that all it does is holds water i don't have to worry about that oh yea and just to let you know guys know you talked me into getting a PC so i am off to the store to pick the gear up.

For PF tek using brf you can just sterilize the jars by boiling them for an hour and you'll be all set. I've never had a contam issue doing this.

vermiculite is there in the PF mix for structure and water retention.
do the PF tek and follow the directions and you'll be all set.

boiling works as long as u 1. do it fer an hour 2. maintain proper temp 85^

exactly...I don't know why ppl are telling you you'd NEED a pc for the pf tek cause the fact is you don't....even grains CAN be done without a pc....I personally don't have a pc and I have done fine so far

you would be correct in saying that the people i live with don't like to party. I already went and got all the supplies i mentioned above including the pressure cooker i just i just needed a good excuse to tell my mates.

Tell them u bought a pc 2 cook ie large meats, soup, stews, alot faster than normal...

see tremor i could easily see myself doing somthing dumb like that or leaving my closet door open or somthing stupid you know. I mean you try to go through every situation that could come up in your mind...i.e. "i was just closing you closet door and saw" or "I was trying to help you out and put _ away for you" their is just to many factors to grasp all i can do is minimize my odds of getting caught. But thank you for you comments. Besides if the place i ordered my spores doesn't get their ass in gear all i will be growing is mold in my myco bag. I think next time i am getting them from ralphster and going to start to try making prints.
