Optimal Fruiting Time Window??
    #19611038 -

Okay guys it's been a while. I'm still alive! And still free :paranoid:

I have some full pint jars(all I could find in my location but still looking for half pints locally), PF tek, dry verm layer on the top. Tops off with the lid flipped upside down and not put on completely straight to allow gas exchange with extra help of keeping contams out.

My problem is a few have gotten to 90%+ and have stalled, mainly on the bottom corners. The ones that are stalled have significant invitro and pinning inside the jar. I think they are SLOWLY finishing up. I don't want to take it out and let the uncolonized substrate be food for other junk.

Is there a "this is the best time frame for fruiting" or will I be safe to leave them in the jars until they finish, pick the invitro shrooms, and then dunk? Or should I birth now, cut off all uncolonized parts , dunk, and let it keep fruiting in a better environment where I'll get more out of it? I've tried flipping the jars upside down bt that seemed to create a lot of condensation on the top and make the uncolonized parts more "soggy" looking. Also the color of the new and slow mycelium is a bit funky and maybe off colored white like an egg shell. It's iffy though, it's not a "that's DEFINITELY a contam."

So should I give it at least one more week before birthing or should I birth now while it's in it's "prime" and ready to fruit and cut off anything that could give me a chance of losing my crop? I had 7 jars originally and 4 of them came out fine. They also started pinning inside but they colonized in time and everything went fine. Now Im about to pick a flush off one of the cakes that was made the same time as the one stalling with invitro shrooms growing.

With the larger jars, I have noticed that sometimes I will get a stall or two. If they are in vitro, chances are you might actually have a contamination. Mushrooms will rush to reproduce spores if there is another competition for food or survival.

You could birth it and cut off the un-colonize area. You could let it go another week or two and never get it out of the damn jar. You could birth it in the jar in vitro and let them grow from the top of the jar.  It is really up to you, but your in a screwed situation. I say leave them for another week.

The ones fruiting now had invitro pins while colonizing but finished up on time and are fruiting well and haven't had any contam problems though. I will probably wait another week. Play it by ear. Do you mean birth in jar like this?

Definitely not trying this again until I get some half pints. I usually use the 9er tek which is whole grain brown rice and it colonizes quick and fast but I realized that some of the grains have a greater chance of getting infected and contaminated faster than PF cakes.

You can find them at just about any store for 2 or 3 dollars a pack. http://www.shroomery.org/11387/Plastic-tek
I use the rubbermaids but they're hard to see in. I variate from the tek above and just use the original pf tek 4 hole and verm barrier.

Too late for that lol the aluminum lid made it pin on the sides instead :frown: If I taped the sides up and just let the top open and maybe a layer of verm im afraid I'd get trich on the verm (which is why I quit rolling after dunking, trich everytime) and the shrooms on the sides will rot inside after being taped up.

I don't buy things from the internet but I live in a small rural town and I think a walmart a few towns over (30min or so) has some half pints. At least what my buddy told me

Thanks for all the help guys!

do u need a certain species to grow from jar

All sorts of different species will grow from the jars like that it's just not an optimal way of fruiting because you get the jars to produce much more with other methods. Such as cubes in a mono or oysters in straw logs both of which will fruit from a jar like that given proper conditions

Good luck finding the half pint wide mouths and not the jelly jars. I searched everywhere. Three walmarts, kmart, target, the mall, 2 lowes, home depot, and bed bath and beyond. Then I went to the dollar store and got the plastic ones.

I found the wide mouth half pints at a small local grocery thinking I would find them at all the big stores such as Home Depot first but to my surprise stumbled upon them shopping for some baking supplies
