I think its a good idea, a lot of work at first though....

I feel strongly about archiving (or having the ability to download) important teks, methods and ideas. Soon, this place will be so big that it will be difficult to organize any type of archive/library.

eh... im sure someone has taken the time to write a script to convert html to PDF, if so it would be rather easy to put a link at the bottom of every page on the shroomery that could be converted to a pdf and downloaded....

uhmm.. because the discussion was involving translating the good info on the HTML pages to PDF to create a PDF library... PDF is used in a wide range of operating systems, readable on any platform with a reader (most if not all) and will look the same on each and every one of those platforms...

Besides what would be the point of putting a link to save an HTML file of the HTML you just outputed, thats what file->save is for, the link to download the PDF would start downloading a PDF document with the body of text, usefull for encrypting and sending to the ultra paranoid that are afraid of visiting this site, (although i must admit id feel better if the site was encrypted from index to otd)..

Ok. I know what file->safe is for and therefor I didn't understand what the advantage of a pdf file would be.

Hey windex, can you write or find a script that can be put at the bottom of each page so that if someone wants to save the thread as a .pdf they could? That would be neat!

Enter, I'm 99% Sure that its not hard to convert HTML to PDF. The thing is deciding what gets put into the "library" and who will do it. The FAQ's are a good start but there is so much more floating around the boards that is good knowledge.

/me thinks more of this plan!

Honestly, I only see two sections that could be usefully as pdf, all of the mushroom info section (http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7910) and the faqs and glosseries from this section: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23041

A script to spider through these sections and pdf them at regualr intervals (once a month) to update any additions.

Instead of spliting each topic in the mushroom info, simply put it in one "book", it will definitly make it larger, but if i refer back to the paranoids who wont visit a site like this but still want the info encrypted and sent to em would be better off with the entire book then having to go through a million things, theres good need to know info that pertains to the entire proccess in every aritcle there so it would still be benificial...

on a side note, did the above make sense to everyone? cause, i think i have a form of dyslexia, can form well thought out ideas but something happens when i try to put it in words or on paper...

alright, i pm'ed 3d, if the shroomery has a development server available or other such resource as to make it impossible for something to fsck up the site, i would work on a script if 3d would allow me... what im considering is adding a link to each of the non-forum pages that will generate a pdf of the page, not exactly along the one book for the section, but i started thinking pdfs can get rather large real quick, they would probably end up being too big for most people to bother downloading...

So what you're saying is that this spider would make a big .pdf of the enitre forum? That would be big!

What if a script could be made that simply told the admins, mods etc.. that a particular thread is worth archiving?

For example, Little Johnny reads a thread, off to the side there's a little check box that says "Should this thread be archived - Check Here" ...or something like that :smile:

Little Johnny likes the thread a lot! So he checks the box, hits sumbit and a PM is sent to the few of us who are working on this little project, we in turn look over the thread, approve it, and every month a little spider comes along and archives it to the pdf?

The mushroom cult forum gets an average of 244.61 posts a day.

While pdf is great and all, I still don?t see the big advantage of making pdf from html.

I would stay away from pdf versions of other peoples work. Copyright infrigment isn't fun!

I can why you'd want a pdf over an html file. I would think that the main reason would be for asthetics (it will always look the same) and especially if someone wants to print it up, it will look nice and crisp :smile:

I'm going to take a step back and say....

I don't think it will be hard to convert anything into anything...

It will be hard to sort through and organize.
