grass clippings?

I'm thinking of using PF cakes as a bulk spawn (I know, not ideal, but it should work) on straw, just because I happen to already have a lot of suitable straw on hand. However, I also have a huge pile of grass clippings which have been dumped in a specific spot to slowly decompose for the last three summers or so. Is this stuff suitable for use as a bulk substrate? Better than straw?

I don't think that grass clippings work. If you notice in your straw, you have green sprouts. These are alfalfa grasses that you want to discard. I think that grass doesn't decompose enough on it's own to be used as a bulk substrate. You can compost it,but you can't hev much grass in there.

Grass will work, although it it is more prone to contaminating. I use it as a bulk substrate in outdoor beds and outdoor flower pot grows. Add a little manure compost and away you go. I wouldn't recomend it for idoor grows though, but you can try.

When I use it, I soak it in boiling water with bleach added. I let it soak for about four hours and then let it drain overnight. Also, make sure that it is completely dried out first. I also compost my grass clippings adding manure and turning it every now and then to make some really nice compost that works pretty good as well.

I tried dried grass clippings once.. they took ages to colonise compared to straw due to the denser nature of grass and it seemed to hold a bit too much water aswell. The shrooms got pretty big but everyone who tried them commented on how weak they were.. not something I'll bother with again..

I've felt no difference in potency with shrooms grown on grass clippings. I also always use cow manure with it though, so may make a difference.
