Aged grass clippings a suitable substrate??
    #5276835 - 02/08/06 10:26 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone has ever tried using grass clippings as a bulk substrate?? We have a a bagging lawnmower and for years my dad dumped the clippings in the same spot, and they have been sitting there. The pile is brown, and from what it seems to me is no different in smell, appearance, or texture from aged H poo. So it would seem to me this stuff would work well, especially if i innoc'd the pile in the summer:) Has anyone tried this with any success, or do you all think itll work well, even possibly comparable to poo? Thanks.

yes I have tried, but it was a failure. What you can do is put the grass in a plastic bags in the sun with just a little bit of air exchange so gas can escape and you will have something that can be used instead of poo after 4-5 weeks,

i tried this last summer w/ a old casing. i took it out and crubled it up a lil into the clippings pile.. got some fat shrooms the stems were usuly around 1" round on average, but they were only 3-4" high caps were about 5" around though.. only problem i had was it would dry out realy fast so i had to water it every day.

I am not lost.. i am going there looking for it.. and when i get there and find it, i will know what it is..

"are you sure u want to eat all them shrooms??"  "yes i want to hear what my mind has to say..."

Thats basically composting right? I can do that once it warms up a bit more then. I am looking for something i can have LARGE amounts of for the summer so if that'll work thatd be great:) Does anyone know how the results are compared to poo?? I dont know in other parts of the country, but around here most of the horse's diets around here is proabaly 90% of the same grass in the summer, so itd seem as good or better to me.

Hmm... did you have it cased outside, or just the grass pile as it was?? I had considered building a small "tent" out of clear plastic with some holes in the bottom to cover the bed with, as i have ahd drying problems as well in the past.

clear plastic would probly bake them into the ground. if anything would cover with an opaque plastic in a very shady area. you don't want the greenhouse effect.
