Fruitbody Size Issue
    #1908515 - 09/12/03 04:33 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

A friend has been using casings, coir/verm/peat/oyster shell. He uses this at 4 cups/2cups/2cups/1/3cup in the order mentioned. Bakes it at 175 for 1 hour, lets cool.

He uses pf style cakes, then breaks them up into a small kitty litter pan, and then cases with the before mentioned casing mix, around 3/4 deep (1/4 of the substrate).

He uses a clear plastic storage bin as a terrarium, this has an air pump line run into the side wall and he has tried 6 1 hour air exchanges a day, and 24/7. Above the tub is a Bright Stik Florescent tube run 24/7 for light.

The problem he is having, and this has happened with 2 batches of Creepers, and now one batch of Ecuadors, is that all the shrooms only get about 2 inches, some rare few make 3 inches, many are smaller. He gets a good amount, about 1/2 0z dry, but why are they staying small? But the caps open up at 2 inches usually, and they grow slow.

The temps range from 70 - 73.

I have seen pictures of other grows of the same strains he tried, I cannot figure out what would hamper how tall they grow. Any suggestions?

Turn that light down. Try a little test. Watch the shrooms when you turn the light down to say a 12hrs on 12hrs off and see when the shrooms do most of their growing. Thiis is just a test but I think you'll like what happens.

I will give that a whirl

Also, there is 6 inches of growth space (headroom) in the fruiting chamber. The mushrooms do not sense that and stay short? Is 6 inches of height ok? thats all the terrarium will allow.

Any help appreciated

6" is good
kramer says magash is right on as usual in cutting the light back
once you have pins cut it down to 4-6 hours a day and your shrooms should grow much larger
says kramer

are the caps cracking? sounds like what happens when you grow without a humidity chamber...it can be done but the shrooms stay small

cutting back to 4-6 hours light a day makes them grow larger? Wow, I had never read anything on that. Any more links or references to this?

I really appreciate the help, /sends

Yea, it's a known fact mushrooms need light to grow, but they don't need 24 hours of light. Just enough to know which way is up. They grow best in the dark, trust me.

how deep is your substrate....

IME substrate DEPTH is a DIRECT link to how big the mushrooms grow

5inches or more is reccomended for maxium size....
try a smaller surface area, and deeper substrate...

terrarium size has nothing to do with it... my mushies almost always touch the top of mine.....

Yeah, my friend's terrarium has a low ceiling and the shrooms will just hit it, change direction, and keep on growing.

I think that having a florescent light on over your shrooms 24/7 is a really bad idea. Not only is light 24/7 a bad idea as people have mentioned, but a florescent light hanging that close to your babies on all the time is another thing all together. There have been a lot of studies to show that florescent lights aren't very good for humans and I imagine that they are just as bad for our little friends. They emit all kinds of nasty radiation and stuff. In one experiment mice who were placed under a florescent light 12 hours a day lived half as long as those in natural sunlight. How would you like it if somebody held a florescent light in front of your face 24/7. That shit must be bright too, and I know shrooms in nature love the shade. Ambient room light or blue spectrum is best. Ditch the florescent. Shrooms only really need light to initiate pinning anyway.
