Experienced grower, but first time with PF Tek....

OK, my friend has done casings and bulk, but has never attempted the PF tek. He doesnt have his pressure canner anymore so he wanted to try this tek with just steam sterilization. The only problem is, is that he has 1 pint jars and not the standard 1/2 pint. He mixed 2.5 cups BRF, 5 cups verm, and 2 cups bottled water...he then put the mixture into 4 pint jars. He noticed that the mixture was wetter than he expected to see, but proceeded anyways. He tamped down the mixture in the jar on his palm and topped off with dry verm. He then drilled 1/2" holes into the center of the lids, covered with filter disks and put the bands on loosely...and then covered with foil. He put a washcloth on the bottom of the saucepan to prevent direct heat filled with 2" of water and brought to a boil...inserted the 1 pint jars and turned down the medium heat. Right now they are steaming, but the saucepan lid is allowing some steam to escape from the edges. He will do this for 1 hour. He plans on injecting 1cc of spores directly thru the filter disks into the substrate and incubating. Due to the saturation of the substrate I doubt it will work, but hey, BRF and verm are cheap and he has spores to spare. Any comments on how this will come out?

I think you might have to steam a bit longeg as you are using pints.
Steamed many half-pints for 1 hour for PF tek and had no problems.

I was thinking that myself...all of his water steamed away at an hour and he removed, so we will see how it turns out. He plans on spawning to an outdoor bed, where the weather outside will be perfect in 5-6 weeks. 2 cambo and 2 Thai Koh...if successful, he might put the Thai outside in the bed, and spawn some dung/straw with the cambo indoors.

It should be fine... if its a little wet the mycelium might grow slower but it should be fine. Also it takes alot long for a pint jar to colonize than a .5 pint. Your steralization should be okay, some contaminates just wont be killed anyway.
