    #19016562 - 10/22/13 09:58 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Is it crazy to spend that much for 24 servings of hot chocolate. BUT Its fair trade, and quality stuff! Like 73% coco!

Its not crazy right! Thats only $3 a serving

Its called Taza chocolate http://www.tazachocolate.com/

Ive tried a sampler pack off amazon and its pretty legit. They support small cocoa farmers in an industry notorious for exploiting children for its labor....They only use quality ingredients in alternative to Abuelita or Ibbara Mexican chocolate which is filled with crap.

But its sooo pricy

While I agree with the fair trade principle, the end consumers are getting seriously ripped off, and the growers aren't getting any more money when you pay 10 times the retail price than a comparable product.

Don't want to believe it? Then check these links.

1. The Fair Trade Standards document, which is the current agreement in place, showing the price of regular cocoa being $2000/tonne for regular beans.

http://www.fairtrade.net/fileadmin/user_upload/content/2009/standards/documents/2012-10-01_EN_CocoaPremium_StandardsAnnouncement.pdf

2. Now check the official daily commodity value of beans, and you will see that it's over $2300/tonne.

http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/?commodity=cocoa-beans

Effectively, Fair Trade partners are being paid less. You, on the other hand, have been royally screwed by paying $70 for what started as 2.5 cents of raw product. Some people are doing well out of this scam, but it's not the ones in developing countries, it's the wealthy western executives behind the rort

Wow....interesting stuff. But what about the creating American Jobs thing as well? Can you see any reason to justify such a purchase?

American jobs, what are you talking about? Fair Trade don't protect American workers rights, the government should be doing that. Plus, commercial cocoa bean production is in countries such as Ghana, Brazil, Bolivia and even areas of asia (indonesia and southern india grow cocoa, i have seen it for myself)

The only Americans you are supporting by buying Fair trade products at a 1200% markup are the ones who own yachts and drive a Mercedes.

You can attempt to justify paying a huge markup as much as you like, if it makes you feel better. But regardless, whether buying a Nestle product or a premium brand, that minimum wage girl still needs to be there to sell it. The transport workers still need to drive the goods to the stores, regardless of which company it's warehoused in. Nobody's life has changed whether you buy the supermarket cocoa or the fancy stuff. Well, no one but the people seeing 'fair trade' as a reason to mark up the goods ridiculously.

I'd have to agree with osama on this one. Fair trade is mostly a shame to give reason to upmarket products and charge more. $70 hot chocolate? If I was spending that much I'd make hot chocolate out of Amedei Chuao or Porcelana the best you can possibly get. American jobs? if you want to support that buy Hawaiian vintage chocolate, it's the only chocolate grown and made in the USA from start to finish. It's also quite rare and expensive, but you don't seem to mind spending money on this kind of stuff anyway. If you want to really make an impact on the lives of others, then do buy USA made products and stop buying and supporting chinese and bangladeshi made products or anything made in countries with sweatshops. Also be mindful of where you shop, places like Walmart funnel money to pro business republican types that champion overseas exportation of US jobs, same goes for whole foods.

You should just buy the most expensive cocoa powder (fair trade or not) you can find and make your own hot chocolate. Plenty of recipes online. If you use dried milk you can make a mix in bulk. You could also use fresh milk/cream http://allrecipes.com/recipe/creamy-hot-cocoa/

Will be much cheaper and probably better. You can also control the sugar content.

technically using cocoa yields "hot cocoa"

hot chocolate uses actual chocolate and to me is far better than even the best cocoas. google Laduree's recipe for chocolate chaud.

Don't listen to the naysayers.  If you liked it and it were something you did out of kindness, then $70 is not that much to spend on 24 people..

If you bought it for yourself then your just a greedy selfish bastard.
