Only DampRid Dry?
    #1900198 - 09/09/03 11:09 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Can i dry only using this damp rip and not a fan also? Will it take a long time or what should i expect. I just don't want to ruin my shrooms, they have been drying with the damprip for about 10 hours now. any suggestions? kinda hard to get a fan going around here since there are parents around. thanks

If they are in an airtight container with a sufficient amount of DampRid, expect mostly dry in 3 days, and cracker dry in 5-6 days.

Rubbermaid container: $4
DampRid 1/2 gallon: $3
1/4" hardware cloth (metal mesh): $8

Taadaa!

well i bought like one container of damprip ( go here to see the size http://www.damprid.dsiwebbuilder.com/2078/fg01rev_sm.jpg ), and i have a container than is taller than it is wide, about as wide as the damprid thing, but it just slides in, then a sceeen above that. I figured that would work. definitaly not a half gallon tho.

I've been planning to build a new drying chamber since mine sucks, where would I come up with this "hardware cloth"?

I found the hardware cloth at Home Depot. It is in the Garden department - just ask for "chicken wire". I got a roll of 1/4" (that's the gap in the mesh), 2' wide by 5' long for $8 and change. Make sure you get 1/4" mesh; 1/2" is too wide - your shroomies will fall through.

I got an airtight rubbermaid storage container at Wal Mart for about $4. This is not one of the big Rubbermaid bins - it's a 12" round container with a tight lid that you'd use to store food in the fridge.

You will also need something to cut the wire to fit into the container. You can get tinsnips at Home Depot if you don't have wire cutters at home already. Scissors will NOT work to cut that stuff... you need something strong.

Then, to setup the container, cut some mesh to fit into the bottom of the container, about 1" off the bottom (to give water somewhere to go). Put a washcloth or some cheesecloth on this mesh and put the DampRid on that. Cut another piece of mesh to fit into the container about 1" above the DampRid layer. You don't want this layer to touch the DampRid. You then stock your fruits for drying on that top layer, seal the container, and set it aside for a few days.

Gern

Sounds good. I already have a big rubbermaid container I'm not doing anything with, so I'm thinking I'll use the same basic idea only I'll construct a wooden frame for the mesh to fit onto.

That should work to make a big container - you just want to make sure that it's fairly airtight. Otherwise, the DampRid will start pulling whatever residual moisture leaks into the container from the outside as well.

If you have any of those snap-tight thingies on the lid, you're going to have a tough time. If you don't, then try getting some clear silicon weather stripping (WalMart - $2) and setting a bead of that inside the lid (the underside of the lid, where it sets on the container). Let that dry, and you should have a fairly airtight seal.

I'll probably experiment with something very similar here in the near future. If you build one, let us know how it works!
