Do used or unused socks work best?
Nice little tek, Moe.
Luckily my ex-wife bought a Ronco food dehydrator and left it with me when she hauled her ass out of here. Therefore I have all my drying needs taken care of...lucky ol' me

Yeah, I never plug it in....
Right now where I live, small shrooms will actually air dry pretty quickly....which is perverse considering the humidity. I still haven't quite figured that one out!

Do you guys think this will work, its what I'm trying at the moment:
Cardboard box 1x1.5x1 feet, office paper trays as 'shroom' shelves, put in there with one of those 'starter pack' damprid containers (the ones which have the damprid in a top chamber thing and a water collection chamber below) put in the box and closed, will this dry my shrooms out decently, or is the box too big? I figured if it can dry out closets / rooms, it should be able to dry this area out but how long should it take? The shrooms were slightly dried when I picked em, and I put them in front of a desk fan for 1/2 a day before putting into the 'dessicant chamber'.

yeah, you should have no problems, just make sure the box is sealed tight.

your tek works, but I could reccomend a cheaper one, and a more thoughtful one, take 3 cups, get all the right sizes, and have one at the bottom to capture water, one in the middle with holes, and damp rid all around the holes, and have another one inside that with the shrooms, and then put a lid on it. The trick is getting the right sized cups, to make the perfect sized drying chamber.
plastic taco bell super size cups will work.

actually my tek was born in the same manner, I made it in a minute, out of a taco bell cup, the damp rid cup, and another cup laying around, with a sheet of saren wrap over the top, I just wanted to point out conitinous use, and a "water drainage" area is possible. not that your tek does'nt work!

I use damprid myself however after a day or two all of the pellets melt together and form one solid mass. After this happens the damprid doesn't pull water for shit. Is it possible to throw the hard damprid in the oven for a while? or has anyone tried dierite? Seems less messy.

Good tek. I just use the Damp Rid 'starter kit' with a hole cut into the top compartment, a piece of plastic mesh taped under the hole, and the Damp Rid in the bottom compartment. The 'starter kit' is a rip off, though, for the amount you get. Would the mushrooms coming in contact with the the Damp Rid really be that bad, though? It's only sodium chloride, right? Not that it's a good idea to have them in contact with each other, I just wouldn't be that worried if the mushrooms became a bit exposed to it. Of course, I could be really wrong, it happens often.

those cat litter crystals are rechargeable. bake them at 350 for like 20-30 min, allow to cool to below 120 and throw in whatever desicant chamber you want. the advantage to using cat litter over damp rid is that the damp-rid clumps and excretes damp-rid piss, cat litter will suck the water out of slightly fan dried shrooms in under 12 hours.

i have two dessicant chambers made from shit in my house:
1 ziploc tupperware 3in deep some old screen from the patio damprid
i had to go buy the damprid, take the screen and make two squares slightly larger than the ziploc tupperware. stick one in, with about 1/2in away from bottom. then pour damprid on the screen. if the thing collapses use some scotch tape or make a frame with straws (bendy ones work good) and use it to hold the screen up. then put another screen about an inch up on top for the mushies. if it falls do the same thing as above.
ghetto chamber:
big ass burger king cup (plastic) some old screen damprid seran wrap
basically same idea, but this was the first one i made when i realized i needed to dry those mushies right then and there! use seran wrap and maybe a little tape to seal it up.
also a fine wire mesh and a big rubbermaid container can be used instead of old screen and a tupperware container. that would be suitable for bulk drying and the wire mesh can be bent and will hold itself in place without extra support.
you kickass Moe and thanks for the outdoor tek!!!!

In reply to:
It's only sodium chloride, right?
Wrong, that'd be table salt. Damp-Rid is calcium chloride (ice-melt) also quite harmless.
Those of you spending extra money for Damp-Rid, save your money! Buy a large plastic SEALED bag of Ice-Melt (same stuff) and REAL CHEAP IN THE SUMMER!

Question: I just went out and got a large mason jar, damp-rid, and panty hose (Yes, they looked at me funny) but anyway, my main concern is that I don't really have the room to spread out my babies and fan dry first (dorm room). Is it ok to drop them directly in the chamber? I don't mind using more damp-rid. Possible placing them in for 24 hours, replace damp-rid then for 24 more. I just wanted to make sure this will work. I don't want to lose any potency or hurt my babies.
Thank You Squeeky

Sounds like a plan... Just break the "babies" up into smaller pieces (cut the stems down the middle lengthwise and break the caps in half) and shake 'em around in the hosiery every 4-6 hours (the spots where they're touching each other won't dry as fast).
Another tip... "Damp-Rid" is a brand name for calcium chloride, so is "Ice-Melt"
Nuff said?
