Could I take several years of chemistry without enrolling in other classes?
    #18879309 -

Title pretty much sums it up. I want to take organic chemistry as far as I can go with it without having to enroll in other classes like math and english, well I would be willing to take mathematics, but nothing else . . .

Why would anyone need English to study Chemistry :wtfsonic:

Well I am pretty sure I would not be able to get an actual degree in chemistry without taking a lot of other courses, so I am just wondering if i could take just the chemistry alone for several semsters . . .

That would not work for the lab sessions

Sure.  You can apply, and enroll in pretty much whatever college courses you want.  They'll gladly take your money.

I know what you mean, but on the flipside, I've met quite a few science majors that can't write for shit. Effective, concise writing is extremely important in science. You wouldn't believe some of the research papers/lab reports I've read. Absolutely atrocious grammar and syntax.

This.  If you plan on attending graduate school and/or getting an advanced degree in science, your career will probably be 85% writing.

i can't believe that. seems like it should be 85% pouring chemicals from one erlenmeyer flask to another.

It is nice if you can show that something can work in real life, But the important thing is: does it work in theory. . .

Yeah but you're supposed to take English or whatever language in school not university. I never payed any attention in [Language] class. I could still write the best essay in the class (and by far) but would always fail if I had to present unoriginal thoughts (memorized bullshit that nobody cares about).

I had to take a state exam and found myself in a situation where I had to perfectly learn 2 years worth of material in 2 months. I got 100%

Also writing in an engaging scientific style is not something you learn in class. It comes from reading many, many papers, journals and books.

Its a talent. I've got it and most people don't.

That's what laboratory technicians (pipette jockeys) are for.  Typically, a research professor will be writing about the results, writing for grants, writing papers, writing, and writing.

I do agree that scientific writing is much different than standard "English class" writing.  Even within the domain of "scientific writing", the style will vary considerably depending on whether you're writing a textbook, journal article, regulatory submission etc. etc.  However, the basic foundations of writing that one can learn in an English class, or even a "creative writing" class are very beneficial IMO.

In most schools you can enroll as a "sit-in" in which you take the course, do all of the work, but get no grade & earn no degree. Spots are limited, but it's free if you can get in.
