Out of all you shroomers, how many have studied organic chemistry? I'm wondering how crucial it is to understanding how the drugs work etc.

If you want to know how the drugs work, you should study Pharmacology.

I found it to be difficult but rewarding.
You do not need an organic chemistry-depth knowledge of molecular interactions to understand pharmacology.
Probably just general chemistry and lots of biology/physiology prerequisites.
if by "how the drugs work" you really mean "how to make drugs", then yes. you do need organic chemistry.

Organic chemistry is all carbon based molecules and the study of them. Will help you make drugs etc but not how they work with the brain...wll a little but that's it

Right now studying as a biochemistry major. If you want to know how drugs affect the mind and the mechanism-of-action of drugs then a more specific field would be psychopharmacology. Organic chemistry is crucial to understanding biochemistry and subsequently pharmacology.

At my school O chem is ridiculously hard. So many people fail that most people who are required to take it petition to take it over the summer at a community college. Luckily my major requires either O chem or physics, so guess I'm going with physics. If it wasn't an especially hard O chem course I'd go with O chem tho.

O chem SHOULD be ridiculously hard.
it's designed to punish students and ruin their sophomore or junior year of college

i took organic chemistry 1 and 2 and i liked it. it was just organic synthesis, solubilities, etc. i probably forgot all those reaction mechanisms but if you show me one i will probably get it and know how the reaction will work which is pretty cool. if you wanna synthesize drugs organic chemistry is gonna lay down the basic science or you.

That will be me this time next year
I enjoy challenges going the honors route. Gonna eat up as much education as possible.

Took a year of O chem (1 & 2) for biology. It wasn't quite as difficult as I was told.
One of those things that you really have to study for. Most of it is rote memorization, nothing is really intuitive.
Learning IUPAC nomenclature was a pain in the ass.
The labs were kinda fun though.

Aww I thought I was gonna be enlightened with new concepts that will motivate my interests to keep moving forward.
Honestly I like the math to chemistry. It 'makes sense' to me, after some studying of course . I'm a math person haven't pick up a book to read for my own leisure in years. Fortunately that is about to change. I'm forced to read, and I like it that way.
IUPAC? There is more nomenclature? I had so much fun naming organic compounds in chem 101. I Like looking at a molecule and noticing ester /hydroxide/carboxyl/amino groups.

I forgot them though. Hmm.. R-C=OOH is carboxyl? Damn I need a refresh

Nope.

There really isn't any math in undergraduate organic chemistry.

If you like math, take a year of gen chem. Organic chemistry isn't really math based. Most of it is just Lewis acid/base reactions.

I am currently taking general chemistry honors. Then it's organic and maybe biochem to prep me when I transfer to IVY league
I'm also going to take physics first but I need to finish calculus before making the attempt. That way i can ACE that mofo. I'm in precalc currently.
I enjoy acid base reactions helped me learn to blast off I bought a pH meter for my next extraction. Gonna do it all professional, like in lab I never really wrote down how much I get for each extraction. I want to see if my technique is getting better.
I learned a new method of getting a pure substance. Called chromatography? It has to do with stationary stuff and moving stuff...idk just learned it Monday lol. I wonder how it works? I will learn in lab. Can't wait

Are you afraid of youth? That's too bad. It's my second year changed majors. Psychology didn't need any math or science classes.
Psychobiology, on the other hand, changed my schedule completely.

I took organic I & II and organic lab. It's pretty important for how drugs work, but biochemistry is much more important. Take orgo first then biochem. It would probably make a lot more sense in that order.
