arrggh...dudeman STILL has probs...
    #1877392 -

hes a freaking college grad...and he f-d up wbs and now popcorn. using the recommended teks and reading the faq's. at least he got a little growth in the popcorn. it just started good and he shook it and nothing a week later. just little torn up lookin peices of mycelium on the bottom of the container.

hes got penis envy(hehee) and malabar.

several 1pint jars pc'd, inoc'd 2days later...kept in 82-84F with 75%rh. tyvek patch over 3/8"hole.....HELP!!!!!!!

should he try b+ from a different supplier(my supplier is popular and known for good product *and dudmans a newbie*)?

or try brf in pint jars(theyre the only ones i have) and then f-up popcorn again when he trys it?

What was the problem you had when you tried WBS? Contams or nothing grew at all? I am fairly new to this(and a college grad)and have had great success with WBS.

im not sure exactly WHAT his prob is...they looked just like the pics...put a little less than 1cc per jar, then shook it up as per 6tango(he said he knows people that do and are just fine...but he doesnt, duder did and it didnt work)

soaked wbs for 8-10hrs, rinsed(with tap water),loaded into jars to pc. cooked for 60mins, removed from pc, shook, waited a day, inoc, shake, let incubate at 82-85...

popcorn....soaked 20hrs, simmered on stove for 45mins, didnt rinse, loaded into jars same procedure for pc, inoc and incubate...

hes got a bit of bacterial contam in some of the wbs jars...those were inoc'd about a month ago, still no signs of life in most jars(guess his pc works good :-) )

popcorn was inoc'd three mondays ago...growth in half the jars...shook a week ago and they just stopped...

im seeing one major step being skipped in the WBS and popcorn prep....you really do need to let the popcorn and/or WBS set and drain for 30 minutes at least...i prefer to wait an hour....then you can load it up.

I also suggest shaking the jars as soon as they come out of the PC.

That is a good point about the WBS draining, it is an important step. I'm not sure how other people do it, but when I use tyvek on my jars I make two holes in the lid for better air exchange. It does not seem to breathe as easy as using a poly-fil filter.

ok he used a colander and shook the water out for 10mins till NOTHING but seed came out the bottom(i have a hunch theyre too dry as it is).

he shook them as soon as they came out of the pc. to evenly distribute grains...but none were too dry, no real sticking to the sides or bottom.

with popcorn....the malabar did nothing, theres still a bit of clear water in the bottom(from inoc solution). the penis envy started right up but died upon shaking...i think, just looked and there is some growth around were the myc was buts its a pinky/tan hue.

with wbs there was no water in the bottom, just swollen grains -no popped open grains-

yep, i went by the tek. most arent specific enough...there are many many ways to do most of the steps in ANY tek.

which tek(s) did YOU use...i asked this and everyone said theyll all work. i guess you just have to find the one written like youd write...

I dunno what the problem could be. From what you are saying it seems you did everything right. I would still let the WBS drain for atleast 30 minutes but that is just me. I just dunno, unless something was wrong with your spores.

there hardly a mention of this whole site about how moist grain should be before loading into jars(BIG FUCKING IMPORTANT INFO)just a few digicam pics. just says to let drain for 30mis to hr. doesnt even mention rh during draining(pop could be bone dry some places*areas of the country* after an hr. could be just as wet after 30mins (some places) and theres debate about rinsing with tap water. and rinsing in general.

a tek needs to be at least 10pages in order to explain all steps appropriately. and some info is for popcorn and not wbs or the other way around and its hardly labeled well. the faq's here leave alot to be desired.

(sorry just bitching)

"with your own ways..."

i dont want to use my own ways...im a fn newbie. i want a tek that works...or at least a tek with info that doesnt require modification...which ALL of these do...there is no tek here where it is so cut and dry you cannot improvise because its ALL SPELLED OUT.

i will be sucessful. i will. i dont mind reading, i love it. this is a blast to me. im having the time of my life trying this. i just wish there were a more CONSICE tek for popcorn or wbs.

After soaking WBS or popcorn, all the water is inside the grain. After letting it drain for awhile it will still stick together but there is no water coming off of it. I can tell when the bird seed was not left to drain long enough when there are wet spots up against the inside of the jar where the glass meets the grain.

thank you for all your help!!!

"I can tell when the bird seed was not left to drain long enough when there are wet spots up against the inside of the jar where the glass meets the grain."

is this before you cook it?...i might be WAY too wet...you could see where the grain was moist to the touch(inside the glass) but no standing water. (both before cooking and RIGHT after...after a few hours the "wet" look went away.)

should the grain be dry-looking or moist-looking before pcing and before inoc...

is shiney wet lookin grain too wet? cause popcorn had standing water that went away after a day or so(after cooking). then came back after inoc(water from inoc, my guess)

should they be in a CLOSED container for incubating? theyve been in the dark but just under a dark blanket in a non-ac'd room. probs?

how much polyfil is too much. all the faqs use a SIZE determination...i could fit an ounce of poly in the same SIZE hole someone else would use 1/100th(i dont know yet what is reasonable, im new)

should tyvek be taped down across all sides? leaving just a square directly over the hole...?

sporeworks ARE reputable right?

do you HAVE to cook wbs and popcorn b4 use? i didnt cook wbs.

is there anything i could add to grain to help chances? brf, sugar...?

How long has it been since you innoculated? Sometimes it just takes a while longer than you think it will.

Also, my friend prefers not to shake right away when he only uses 1cc of spore solution. He thinks that this spreads the 1cc too thin and it takes the jars a lot longer to start and sometimes they wont start at all. From his experience it's better to just let the solution run down the sides of the jars and shake after you see some strong growth. These are the only two things I can think of. Sorry man.

frizzle...are u fucking with the jars....holding them up...looking for mycelleum and using profane language when you see nothing? a foaf had problems similar to yours and went to 6T for advice....he said to shake and then not fuck with it....leave it incubating at the right temp, in the dark for a week and a half and then look.

the least my foaf has let seed soak is 12hrs and he has done both the 30-45 minute "anal" method drain and the 5 minute, shake and press down in colander method....success both times.

Just leave them alone in the dark for awhile and see what happens
-MM

p.s. my foaf has never worked with tvyek before so he doesent know of any possible problems with that piece of the puzzle, but stamets says, and so will others via experience, that colonizing myc does not need much air exchange.

ok...i thought 1cc per jar was optimal. thats all i hear in the faqs.

i wish i would have read the words AFTER "STRONG" GROWTH before now. damn.

ill go tell duder he needs more solution.

the wbs have been going oh...5weeks now...the popcorn were started 3mondays ago.

what teks do YOU have sucess with?
which ones havent been that hot?
