Popcorn problems
    #1276725 - 02/04/03 07:02 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

The growth is really slow for me, I think it may actually be too dry? I have a space heater running in my closet, and I think it may have actually leached out some moisture from the jars. Judging from results I have seen on here, my jars are growing as slow as molasses. Any suggestions? thanks

I do exactly the same. Its an oiled filled ratiator with a thermostate. I put my jars into a clear plastic container and then spray the inside of the container with a mix of h2o2 and water. The idea behind this is to keep the humidity up in the chamber which will mean there will be a lot less water evaporation from my jars (which have polyfil plugs in them). Its all about keeping equilibrium between the jars and their surrounding atmosphere.

If your interest I can post a pic of this set up. Also I have been successful with popcorn using this approach.

an oil heater????

I hope you got your house insurance paid up to date!!  :smirk:

I'd recommend the fish tank heater with 2 bins method.. cheap and very effective.

will also burn less power than that 1000w heater!!

Thermostate on the heater set to 30C.  Its very effiecient due to the small area it is warming.  Its just like a central heating system, the heater clicks on and off to maintain the temp.  Works well for me, I find fish tank heaters to be a pain in the arse.

I hope you did'nt think I ment an oil burner using a naked flame

i use one of these oil-filled radiators all the time. it is a 1500W heater that you can use at 500, 750, or 1500W. I use the 750W setting and have to turn it to just under the 3 on the max10 dial. these work fucking great. yeah, yeah the ole 2bin incubator is fine if your doing a few half pints but is a real expensive pain in the ass when you want to do upwards of 50 quarts. these heaters don't seem to dry the air like a blowing space heater (my hygro told me so) and they will keep a rather large area heated very efficiently. it is sooooo much easier to just look at and shake jars on shelves than to root around in water filled tubs where you can only see the jars from the top unless you take them out. you can get these heaters for under $50 at lowe's. not to mention that the only high amount of heat it generates is directly above it or in direct contact with it, you can barely feel any heat just scant millimeters away from the sides. don't bash something until you try it, buddy.

I see, this all makes perfect sense now. I too use polyfill, but the jars are just chillin in my closet, not inside a chamber, and the heat is just sucking out moisture. I guess I will have to work with my setup tonite. THanks everyone!

i use an oil-filled heater also. where things incubate and fruit is very cold. i have to heat the entire (very small) room or i would never maintain optimum temps in both incubator and fruiting chamber. it works great for me.
