Popcorn problems
    #2389895 - 02/29/04 11:55 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

These popcorn jars were knocked up friday, the 21st. Afoaf just mailed me and stated there is no growth what-so-ever. The are being housed in a bath at 82 degrees. Tape over innc. hole. One innc. point. The corn was pc'd for about an hour. Then rinsed very well, then dried a with a towel then loaded and pc'd again. Strain is Aussie. Water content seemed perfect. Maybe a bunk print is what I am thinking, for he has never used this print to grow from. What is the white stuff at bottom of jar, heard that its prob starch. Its not myc. Any ideas would help on this slow growing matter. Wait awhile longer? or is it shot?

thats probably myc at the bottom of the jars where the spore solution settled(hard to tell from the pic quality),shake the hell out of them and see what they look like in a few days.

why did you towel dry the corn after the first hour of PC'ing?

To get water right, every thing I have read says to towel dry them or it will be too wet, so he toweled them off.

I have  tried both, and while I like popcorn , I cant wait to get my hands on a jumbo bag of finch seed again.

I like the heakthy mix of seeds.

Anyway, what seemed to work for me with popcorn was this..... a 24 hour soak , then it was cooked in a pot of water on the stove until it was nice and soft , then PC'ed at 15psi for about an hour and a half , which some would say is overkill, then while the jars were still hot, but not really hot, and AFTER the pressure was released from the PC, I shook the jars alot to even out the water content , or at least try to.

Good luck, like I said , I like popcorn , but I cant wait to get some more  finch seed. :mushroom2:

This is just something I heard ,one day  when I was walking through the park  ,I sat down and  listened to this lorax tribute statue talk.

thats what it said.

i started my popcorn the same day you did. i have a couple points of growth in every jar and i did not towel off. they're in a bath at 80 degrees or so. from everything i read, you let them drain for a half hour after letting them soak and boil, then you pc em. no toweling off. thats not to say you aren't gonna get any good growth out of em. shake em up and wait and see.

afoaf places the kernals in the pc, covers with plenty of water, pc's for 70 min, takes out and drains popcorn real well, usually for an hour or more, then load in jars, pc for 90 min and innoculate the next day. Has only had a few problems with wet grains but once u do it a few times it is easier to determine the right moisture content.

I inoculated my first popcorn attempt in mycobags on the 16th of feb. I saw no growth whatsoever until the 24th. Be patient.

I'd say 2 weeks is plenty of time for germination. IME, it has never taken longer than 4 days using multi-spore inoculation methods.

Is that white stuff on the inside of the jar or the outside?
