Who has experience crate training their dog?

I'm gonna have a new homie moving in soon, and I'm Looking at crate training him. So far it seems like a pretty good thing and works with their den-dwelling instincts, and gives them their own safe place.

I'm just curious if anyone here has had experience with it, good or bad.

Good experience here. Just make sure the crate is not perceived as a place of punishment.  Sometimes it's nice to have crates that can double as a nightstand or end table, so they know this is where we relax.  My dog would go in there even if I wasn't leaving.

The way I've always done it is to treat it like their own little personal bedroom. Make them spend a little time in there every day, start out slow at first, and don't use it as punishment. I mean it's ok to the put them in the crate as punishment if need be, like if my dog gets in the trash or tries to piss on the wall because the neighbor's dog is in heat I tell him to get his ass in his house! (that's what we call his crate) You know, like you would send a kid to his room for time out.

But I gotta emphasize this don't make it a punishment for them. Just start them out slowly and build up gradually, help them get used to it. Get them a cool toy and only let them chew it up in the crate. After awhile of spending time in there daily, and getting treats and whatnot in there, they will come to think of it as their own personal space where they can go to be alone whenever they want.

Had to use the crate when he was a puppy so that he didn't pull any shenanigans over the course of the night. He hated the place.

After a while, we succumbed to his manipulations, and after a week, he never spent anymore time in any crates.

my neighbor did this with his dog..

and i am highly impressed with it.

he says house.. the dog goes in there.. doesnt even need toshut the door to it to make him stay

I've done some reading, it seems as long as you start slow, stay consistent, and only associate the crate with positive things and rewards, it works out great.

I'm glad to hear some people here have had success with it.

It definitely makes sense to me

I hate people who leave their dogs in a crate. (Or any other animal, for that matter)

If you can't leave your dog to stretch and run around, don't get a fucking dog.

I don't get why people do crate training. I really do not understand.

It's not about locking them in a box.
It's about giving them a safe personal space, while at the same time training them to go to the bathroom outside, using their instincts.
It also helps keep accidents of all sorts down while you're still training them as a puppy.
