Edited to add: I've long wanted to build a PC that is cooled by a mineral oil bath, which doubles as a fake aquarium.  Toss in some fake robot fish and fake plastic aquatic scenery.  Do parts fail much more quickly with that kind of setup? I would be very surprised if they didn't.

OP its really easy now a days to build a PC. Check out some nice cases from newegg, u want a full tower preferably. Corsair has some great cases I bought their 600t tower for my rig.  Look up the building tutorials on youtube ( Newegg has some real good videos there). U can literally put together ur parts as u watch the videos.

Alienwares are overpriced. All your paying for is the brand. Build it yourself is the way to go by far. Best thing i ever did. Ibuypower is a decent alternative, my friend bought his gaming rig off them the same week I was building mine. They did pretty solid work putting it together. But Its always much more rewarding to do it yourself though.

My apologies for bumping an old thread, but this question is one that may have a different answer today.

I'm still wanting to get a new desktop PC so that I no longer am relying an a souped-up overpriced laptop for gaming.

My essential question is this: is it still cheaper to build it yourself?

Manufacturers can get a good deal by buying in bulk.  I wonder whether it would make more sense to buy a stock PC from some manufacturer and upgrade it myself?  Is that the smarter way to go?

Thanks again everyone.

I've been wanting to make a thread about this for a while. I might as well throw my problem in here too. I bought my laptop about a year ago and ever since I got it, its been running like new. About a month ago Avast crashed out of the blue, and restarted on its own. Now its constantly running flat out and somethings sucking up all the processing power even though Im not using it anymore intensely then I was before. Anybody know what could;ve happened? I get the feeling my laptop may have been zombied. Attempts at finding a solution to this on the internet have all came up empty. The only suggestion I got was to reformat it.

Well, with a custom built PC you get complete control over every last component and can select all around quality hardware... or you can get some good deal on some specs but a crap PSU, Chassis, Motherboard, and Windows loaded up with bloatware if that's what you want....

Guessing you've tried system restore? Past that and checking processes I wouldn't know

It's pretty easy to restore a windows computer's speed manually without downloading a bunch of programs. Just go to msconfig (start > run > msconfig) and under the startup and services tabs uncheck all the unnecessary background process like instant messenger, itunes, etc., pretty much anything that isn't essential (antivirus if you use one, touchpad driver, video card, etc.). Defragment and disk cleanup. Uninstall/delete all the old crap you don't use, especially big files in c:\program files if you know what you're doing.

Download Razer Game Booster for computer games.

That's the best you can do short of reformatting, buying new hardware or a new computer altogether.

Seems like where PC manufacturers can do a lot better than you can is getting a copy of Windows for cheap. If you're just going to pirate it (or use linux or something, though that seems like a poor choice if you want to play the latest games) then it's no issue, but if you buy a legit copy then it's another $100 on the total cost. There is a site connected to Microsoft where you can just download Windows 7 ISOs for free, digital river something.

Don't reformat it, just reinstall windows.

You have to format to reinstall Windows - it's the same thing.

I was speaking of reformatting in the sense of erasing the whole drive and starting from scratch.

I'm fairly certain it'd be cheaper to build yourself. Most prebuilt "gaming" computers are overpriced. I'd recommend newegg for the parts, but before you order, make sure all your parts are compatible and stuff... good luck.

Cheaper to build it yourself. Even if company X gets a bulk discount they still have a lot of overhead to pay for.

Paying for a prebuilt machine and then upgrading it would be about the most expensive way to go about it.

Despite what people will tell you... its really not cheaper to build it yourself.

They never factor in all of the costs.

Building it yourself is still valuable and worthwhile imo.
