Being the boss! Any experienced supervisors out there?
    #18582996 -

So I recently got a promotion to supervisor in the factory I work in. However I have no real experience in being the 'boss'. Are there any out there who have experience in supervising?

I feel like boosting morale might be better for production than trying to use fear tactics. However right now my crew is very dysfunctional and does not listen to me. I need to get control of them and I fear trying to use iron fist by the book tactics might just make things worse.

What are your opinions of what makes a good boss?

should I write them up? or should I try to cater to their childish peeves?

you have to do both... if you lay the iron fist too hard you will create a coo against you.

BUT!

you can't get walked on. you have to set SOME example.

Also, you have to prove that you work just as hard as they do and you don't just boss people around without being able to do the same job yourself.

May I ask what line of work or industry this is?

Tell them you don't want to write them up because you're not like that, but they're leaving you no damn option.
Then start boosting morale if they straighten up a bit. Try to make the environment stress free and happy.

Lead by example.

I just pretty much demean my employees. I go behind their back on most things. Two faced is the way to go; say nice shit to their face but as soon as that door shuts I'm scoring on those dorks so hard, lmfao. I use a lot of threats, too. Like, "I'll write you up if you so much as breathe in a way that I don't approve of". I also like to mix in derogatory words when I'm speaking to them whenever I get a chance. I'll sometimes try to fuck people out of their pay but not like all the time only sometimes when i'm in a bad mood. Makes me feel better.

just kidding i've never held a management position in my life

It's a plastic bottle factory. Blow molding to be specific.

Anyone got good ideas to improve morale?

I feel like we need a wider variety of music than just the pop radio and classic rock radio stations big time.

I might even bring in icewater buckeg with rags to keep cool... It gets 120f in there, and the humidity has been VERY high. I feel like maybe the bad attitudes are coming from the uncomfortable working environment.

To improve morale is easy, and you will be glad you did it.

First thing in the morning when everyone reaches their positions
yell as loud as you can: "LETS ROCK AND ROLL MOTHER FUCKKKEEERRRSSSS"
or
"YOU GUYS READY TO HAVE A GLORIOUS FUCKING DAY!?"

Shit like that.. similar shit.

At lunch time make jokes and be cool. Don't be a dick.

Leading by example is always good. I have been a supervisor for many years and now own my little corporation with 23 some odd employees.  Before I start laying the law down, I usually am seen working twice as hard as anyone else. I have a generally friendly and positive attitude about work, it sets the pace for others.  It is work, work sucks, especially if you are in a bottle factory in 120F weather. Adds insult to injury to have to endure such environment with fruitless bullshit powertripper management tactics. Music is good, iced anything is good, especially if you take time to arrange the novelty yourself.

I do feel it is especially important to figure out the standards you will be a stickler about, and stick to them from day one.  And while being friendly, you have to also not befriend folks. You have tons to worry about and the last thing you need is to be everyone's personal advocate.

Never be seen or heard speaking negatively about another person in your workplace.  Always face challenge with a positive attitude. Thats what good leaders do, and good employees will usually follow.

Bad and negative management tactics lead to mutiny on the ship and make a miserable work place for you to go to as well. No one likes going to work feeling like a load of bricks is on their chest.

Best of luck!

You need to earn their respect.

Be consistently firm but fair. If someone crosses the line, don't hesitate to do what it takes to pull them into line. If you don't play faves, and you're not a jerk, they'll respect you in time. Also, make sure you've got their backs 100% when dealing with upper management - stick your own neck out if you have to.

how about you just man up at work and either take a sword to work and fling it around the workers while they are working to intimidate them, or just pull your giant dick out and pretend that you don't notice them noticing... that will solve your problems.

If the whole workforce has childish peeves, doesnt do what you say, has bad attitudes, etc, i would say that either: 1) They are union in which case interferring with their sitting on their asses and  'it isn't my job mentality' is just going to make them resist harder or 2) they have suffered under an endless stream of clueless buttclowns who where 'supervisors' and didnt have a fucking idea what to do.  Those kinds of supervisors are given 25 cents an hour more than the workers because the company is cheaper than fucking shit, and they don't want to go out and actually find someone--and pay them--that has the skills to actually be a supervisor.

You see leadership style and skills are either natural (rarely) or are learned by someone who has a lot of experience and has learned to deal with people.  And frankly, most people just don't have the leadership skills.

To know what you have to do would require knowing the people you work for.

You just need to lay the ground rules and let them know what is expected of them. It's also better IMO to be the friendly boss on their side, as opposed to the overbearing evil boss. You gotta win them over by showing them that your there to help them and you all have a job to do.

I guess it's a pretty difficult situation to be in. Leadership and management requires good people skills and social skills to be good at it. I don't like having to get into politics and stuff, but unfortunately it's a big part of leadership. I don't like having to deal with people's shit or having to play to others expectations in the work force, but sadly you have to. Otherwise it's just going to lead to further problems down the road. For me it's kind of one of those ' damned if you do, damned if you don't ' types of things.

I am thinking about going out of my way to improve morale going to buy this http://industrialsafetygear.com/hard-hats/940-48P.html and hand them out for free. And then if I don't see any improvements I am going to start coming down on them more.

Just lead by example.

Most "morale boosting" crap is obvious pandering that will get you no respect, and being a heavy handed douche bag will have people scheming to get you replaced.

Just carry on with your job and make sure that everyone else does the same. You shouldn't have any issues unless you have some deadbeats, in which case you need to get rid of them with as little drama as possible.

Be of the group, but above the group.
Lead by example as others said, be the first one there, last one to leave. Nothing worse than a lazy boss.

If they meet quotas or certain deadlines, buy them lunch even if its ordering a bunch of pizzas, or maybe grab a case or 2 of cold beer and break it out when its quitting time at the end of the week.

maybe spring for a nice stereo with a docking station and rotate through the workers ipods and playlists as long as its reasonable music, not sure what your staffs musical preferences are but im sure you don't want a bunch of old guys being forced to listen to rap all day.

Do not buy them things if they do not listen to you. Do not cater to their childish peeves, choose the least productive member of the team and tell him if he doesn't pull himself together on the job he is going to be out of one in a month. If he doesn't listen to you fire him, repeat as necessary. Had to do this only once in my life, It was devastatingly effective.

I work in a warehouse environment as well.  I bet if you got the company to buy a few fans for these guys (if they have designated stations where they are all day, that's perfect) they'll love you.  You could sell it to the company as a safety thing to prevent heat related injuries.  The guys where I work had a 14% increase in production after we installed the fans.  I imagine it had a direct correlation with the fans, but who can prove it?

It's really hard for me to supervise people AND be friends with them. Are you friends with these  people outside of work?

Why am I the only person wondering what these "childish peeves" are, and whether or not they're actually "childish peeves" or legitimate concerns?

Certainly, you can't, nor should you cater to everyone's every desire. However, listening to workers' issues and deciding whether it's having a legitimate impact on performance, productivity, teamwork, etc is an important part of being in a management position. Being a hardass and not listening to people is just as quick a way to get mutiny as being a softy and trying to give in to every little thing.

Balance.

Seems like some people have given some decent advice here, worth thinking about. And the fan thing could also be a great idea, if workable. Anyone who doesn't understand how creating a more comfortable work environment can boost productivity, has never worked very hard, and/or has never worked in a particularly nasty environment. Heat can be a very big deal, especially for some workers. Thinking back to a couple jobs I've held, times where I had to stop to wipe the sweat out of my eyes every few seconds definitely slowed me down a little....

You start by reminding them we are all here to make a great product for the company so we can feed our families.  If anyone has a problem with that you need to come see me privately.  It all flows well when we can focus on the money.
