looking for some help developing leadership skills
    #5881634 - 07/20/06 02:53 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Specifically good leadership skills.

I want to know how to motivate people to work hard, learn faster and become better in general.

I have no clue how to (effectively) take a dominant position in a work related situation. Any help greatly appreciated, especially if you work and are responsible for people.

I used to have to train people on how to do specific tasks and I had to assign them work which needed to be done by a certain deadline.

I was never really harsh with them or anything like that. I would try to be straight to the point, but be supportive of them and show that I had confidence in their abilities.
This seems to work good from the perspective of the person that you are trying to lead.. hearing good things about themselves from you can give them motivation and more confidence.

If they are screw ups and that approach doesn't work, something more harsh might be in order.

I agree with eris. Reward the good things/efforts and it will happen more often. However, nagging or punishing ONLY the bad parts of their work won't accomplish much besides make them resent you. Good luck

Yeah, I think that if your workers start to dislike you that things can only get worse from that point on... if they think highly of you as a leader they will want to do good to impress you.

I wouldn't want to impress a person that I didn't like.

Find a cause you believe in and volunteer. Especially in places like homeless shelters and rough jobs like that, the turnover rate is ridiculous.

I once worked with children in a homeless shelter. Within a year I was the most senior volunteer they had.

Well, you know more than these people you're training, right? So keep that in mind, a sense of humor, and hold them to a high standard. They'll respect you for fair treatment and your knowledge.

well your number one mistake would be to think of yourself as a leader and those below you as your trainees.

they're still people, and they're going to be able to tell if you walk into a situation with a "holier than thou" attitude.

not saying you're going to do this, but it's not hard to fall into when you're presented with a situation that you're supposed to be in charge of.

people respond a lot better to someone they can relate to, rather than someone who is obviously trying to be the man in charge.
