I was posting the other night about a police standoff with my neighbor, too.

A 51-year-old Schuylkill County man faces aggravated assault and other charges after surrendering to Lansford police Monday following a nearly eight-hour standoff in the 500 block of Bertsch Street.

Jefferey A. Gangaware of 226 W. Howard Ave., Coaldale, was taken into custody about 7:25 a.m. by Lansford police.

He was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, and simple assault and committed to Carbon County Prison under $100,000 bail.

According to arrest papers:

Police received a 911 call from the home at 11:51 p.m. Sunday from a caller saying a woman was being held hostage there. Police arrived at the address and kicked in the door when they heard a woman screaming.

As police searched the first floor, Gangaware, who was upstairs, yelled down the stairs and told the officers he had a gun. Around the same time, the woman, Bernice Moser, Gangaware's girlfriend, escaped. Moser told police Gangaware had several guns in the home.

During the standoff, Gangaware, who would speak only to Moser, said that if police entered the home he'd "empty a clip" into them and that the "cops are going to have to shoot me in the head," according to court papers.

Lansford police did not detail the charges to be filed against Gangaware.

There were no injuries, dispatchers said.

Carbon County dispatchers said state police were joined by Lansford police and law enforcement officers from several surrounding towns, including McAdoo, Summit Hill and Jim Thorpe, in responding to the incident.

Emergency Medical Services units and firefighters were also on the scene.

Several surrounding streets were closed overnight and motorists were urged to avoid the area.

There were cops in the house next to me setting up positions with guns.. I slept through most of it not even knowing what was going on until I woke up in the morning.
