Bluish cakes, no fruit.

I have some pictures of my terrarium and my cakes. http://monoxyde.org/~monoxyde/mushroom/ . I have had 3 of those cakes in there for several weeks, no fruit. Little bit of pining. Someone told me they probably weren't getting enough air and were aborting. I cut a hole in the top of my terrarium, and put a fish tank air pump into it. I cut a hole in the bottom for air to be released. These are tiny holes. I water my cakes about every day. 1/4 Hydrogen Peroxide, 3/4 Bottled Water. I have had no luck. Some people told me that the mushrooms were the wrong side up. I had vermiculite up, so I switched this. The browning on a few of the cakes is from the tinfoil that they were sitting on. 3 of the cakes have been in the terrarium for almost 3 weeks now, the other 6 were put in there a few days after they finished colonizing. Can anyone tell me whats up with this stuff? They're Thailand shrooms. Thanks.

I also forgot to mention that the sides of some of my cakes are turning blue. I haven't been touching them... I know this is the color of psilocybin oxidation, whats going on though? Everyone once in awhile, I'll hear a sizzle when I spray in the H2O2 and H2O. I look and I see the peroxide bubbling. Is it killing my mycellium!?

you should NOT spray your cakes directly with h202, or anything else for that matter. cakes are very contam resistant, and they should be getting their moisture from the humidity and a double ended verm casing.

and the ratio is more like 10:1 water/h202 not 3:1

I used pint jars. I am not spraying my cakes directly. I spray the walls of my terrarium. Every once in awhile, a bit of water/h2o2 drips to my cakes though. It is then that it sizzles.

The cakes are sitting on perlite, the perlite is quite dry. There is a bit of vermiculite on the permite (the dirty looking stuff). I did cold shock a few of my cakes for about an hour with ice.

Agreed that it is the peroxide. You say you water your cakes everyday with 1/4 3% peroxide and 3/4 water? That is way too much, it is killing the mycelium. The bluing you see is a reaction with the oxygen from the peroxide, and an enzyme in the mushroom (I have sprayed mushroom stems accidentally and saw a similar reaction to peroxide water). The same thing can happen when peroxide is used in the humidifier, and concentrations are too high. Basically, you are spraying a caustic chemical onto your cake. The browning you see is dead mycelium that has either dried out, or died previously from the chemical treatment.

Stop with the peroxide, or dilute it down at least 10:1 (assuming you use 3% solution). Mist with your new diluted peroxide water into the air after you fan. Perhaps add a bubbler stone to your fish tank pump to supplement humidity and avoid drying your cakes out. They may take some time to recover, and they are more likely to contaminate now that there are dead spots. But, they will most likely make it if you care for them properly.

For a bubbler stone to work, you have to have water, correct? What will I do, put a cup of water in there, and place the stone in it?

Two remarks:
1. Don't put the cakes directly on the perlite. Put some verm on a jar lid and place the cake on top, put the lid+cake on the perlite.
2. Check your terrarium temperature. I'm am convinced that most fruiting problems are due to either too high or too low temperatures.

Also, if the perlite is wet enough, there's no need at all for a bubbler stone; perlite is capable of inducing 99%rH in a terrarium like yours.

I don't know if I have enough room to put on a lid. :-\  I'm going to hopefully buy a new terrarium come Monday and paycheck though. :smile:

man it looks like your humidity is too low for fruiting and maybe your temp... try throwing a couple of icepacks in with your cakes to get it to around 70 degrees... as for increasing humidity... hmmm... a fishtank heater submerged in a good bit of bottled water and set to about 80 degrees should do you just right i would say... trial and error man trial and error... oh maybe i should read some more before i reply... yeah u need a lid to keep your humidity at anywhere close to what you need to fruit imo... if i seem like im rambling i apologize... just coming back in from a 2 gram stroll in the mushroom forest ^_^

It would work, that's for sure. If it's really necessary, I don't know. I suspect that you have a bit too much air exchange, which results in all the moisture being sucked/blown out of your terrarium. Is your aquarium bubbler always on? If so, I suggest hooking it up to some sort of timer, in order to make it 'bubble' a couple of times a day for just half an hour or so. This way, simple perlite humidification should work.

Saw a nice 66 qt bin in the paper today advertised by Target for $5. This should be a way nicer terrarium. :> I'll have plenty of room then.

Ever since I hooked up an air pump to my terrarium, there has been new growth over the brown spots on my cakes.  It is a nice fluffy white, healthy looking mycellium. I do not know if my terrarium is getting enough oxygen though, because when I open it up, it still reeks of shrooms.  I will continue to air it out a few times a day and leave the pump on it.  I'll see how things work out. :smile: :grin:

Keep fanning a couple of times a day. It's ok that the terrarium smells mushy though, there _are_ mushrooms growing there :smile:

Yep, that's exactly what you do.  Add some H2O2 to the water, too, for good measure.  :smile:
