Ask a Car Salesman
    #18381904 -

So like the subject states, I'm a new and preowned car salesman.

"The non-sleezy type"

I've been doing this for 13 years and have held almost every position a dealership has to offer.

So if anyone in this AWESOME community ever needs any advise on any part of the car buying

experience including but not limited to pricing, financing or how to handle issues after the purchase,

please feel free to ask.

JCS

Rarely.....but it does happen. Not under the assumption that it would help them get a vehicle but I've had a couple of freaks over the years that wanted to bang on the test drive. And, yes, I kindly accepted. Its kinda like there is a small portion of the female population that actually have a car salesman fetish. I like that portion:yeahthatsright:

How many times a week do you do cocaine with your coworkers?

1.  When I see a sticker price, can you give me an estimate of how much you'll actually let the car go for?  (e.g. 10% less than sticker, 20%, etc).

2.  How often can you successfully get a customer to blow through his/her budget?  I'd consider myself a disciplined spender.  When I tell you what I want to spend, I mean it.  I've had numerous salesmen try to sell me a car over twice my stated budget, and they seem to get pissed when I walk away.

Is it ever true that they have someone coming to look at the car in about 30 mins?

1. Dealerships don't use a percentage to mark vehicles up. It all depends on what they actually put in the vehicle and what the highest value they can find to justify the asking price. When working a new car deal they may put extra money in a trade to try and hit their new car objective.  Always throw the trade in when a adequate selling price is reached. Don't let them know you have a trade till the last minute.

2. You'd be suprised how often. I'd say around 15%

When buying a new vehicle, always insist on seeing the invoice. If they won't show it to you go somewhere else. I've never had a problem sharing the invoice with customers. It usually means they're not wasting my time and they're ready to buy.

Say the invoice says 20k.  What's a fair price for the car?

If you have a $20,000 invoice, you want to subtract any rebates or dealercash from that and about

$400-$600 more for dealer holdback. So if there is a $1,500 rebate you should pay about $18,000

plus the tax, tag and fees.

After 13 years, has your salesman prowess increased and if so how much?

Also, after 13 years, how much are you making now? What was the pay like in the beginning?

Times change, and so must your approach at selling. It takes lots of practice and training. Shit, I just enrolled in some new training this morning. All paid for by the dealership. If anyone ever tries to charge you for training RUN. Any reputable company will pay to strengthen it's sales force.

Last year was my worst year since my first $49,000.00.  2006 was my best $127,000.00. My first year was $30,000.00.

Thanks for answering. I'm also curious as to what kind of hours/days you and/or car salesmen in general work. Is there a lot of OT and weekend working?

Also, did you go to college? Have most car salesmen graduated college? Is it important to have a collage education in order to sell cars?

1. I work 55 to 65 hours a week.

2. I only have my GED. It's about half and half, half with the degrees and half just high school.

Good thread.

1. Do car salesmen still use the 4 square technique?

2. I was in sales of electronics and other things over the years. Are you somewhat bias on what you like to sell (e.g. Ford vs Chevy) I would always try to lean someone towards their needs and pick what I would suggest most reliable and bang for the buck.

3. Bringing up a trade in the last minute is a good idea, but can't you usually hustle a little more depending on the vehicle and condition?

4. Used cars are were the cash is right now, so I assume that's why your selling used not new.
