Photon cooling, stopping atom movement, forcefield like walls of laser beams..

some fun technology here..

Quote:
Raizen stopped atoms by passing a supersonic beam through an "atomic coilgun" and cooled them using "single-photon cooling."

The techniques are a major step forward in atomic physics and have a variety of scientific and technological applications. They could be used to determine the mass of the neutrino, which is the primary candidate for dark matter.

"Our methods open up whole new avenues of research," says Raizen, professor of physics. "We can control almost any atom and many molecules."

The results, published in two papers in the March 7 issue of Physical Review Letters, are the culmination of years of work trapping and cooling atoms by Raizen and his research group.

To date, cooling atoms near the Absolute Zero (-459 degrees Fahrenheit) has been accomplished using laser cooling, a method that was recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997. Despite its enormous success, laser cooling has been limited to a small set of atoms in the periodic table.

Raizen says his two methods can be used in tandem to trap and cool near Absolute Zero any of the paramagnetic atoms, which make up over 85 percent of the periodic table.

In one set of experiments, a supersonic beam of neon atoms was completely stopped using a 64-stage coilgun. (In prior studies, Raizen used an 18-stage coilgun to slow neon atoms.)

The coilgun works by shooting a supersonic beam of atoms through a 3-millimeter diameter bore wrapped by 64 magnetic coils made of copper wire (thus, 64 stages). The coils slow the atoms by making them climb a "magnetic hill." The hill is removed before the atoms have time to roll off and regain speed, and the atoms become magnetically trapped.

"The wonderful thing about the coilgun technology is its simplicity," says Raizen. "We use ordinary copper wire for the coils. The hope is that this will allow others to use the technique to trap and cool the other elements."

Key to the success of the coilgun is the use of supersonic beam technology developed by Raizen's collaborator, Professor Uzi Even, from Tel-Aviv University.

Stopping and cooling most of the atoms of the periodic table is now possible using a pair of techniques developed by physicist Mark Raizen at The University of Texas at Austin.

In the other set of experiments, atoms were cooled using a method called "single-photon cooling."

The atoms were trapped in a box made of green lasers fitted with an internal barrier--a one-way wall of laser light that allows atoms to pass through one way and not the other. It behaves much like a cellular membrane that allows ions to pass through in only one direction.

Researchers who worked on the atomic coilgun experiments from The University of Texas at Austin were Dr. Edvardas Narevicius, Adam Libson, Christian Parthey, Isaac Chavez and Julia Narevicius. Single-photon cooling researchers include Gabriel Price, S. Travis Bannerman, Kirsten Viering and Narevicius.

that is amazing because of the fact that the properties of atoms to us where we use a simple term such as 'heating' or 'cooling' or 'splitting' an atom is very massive in the atomic world.

atoms are not supposed to variate much WHAT SO EVER such as heating or cooling or splitting even slightly. they are held together with a force in the atomic world equivalent to you trying to pull apart concrete with your fingers.

when we 'split' an atom and simply take it apart like legos being dismantled, you have radiation and the atom bomb was discovered.

when you combine two atoms nucleus such as taking one screw off a washer and then putting that washer on another screw with another washer on it already, you have fusion, which results in such things as stars and hydrogen bombs.

what is the result of 'heating' or 'cooling' an atom? usually people say heat or cool doesn't exist except as the release of energy or transfer of energy, and all it is are the atoms vibrating more as heat, and cold is simply the absence of heat where the atoms slow down and vibrate less.

how do you measure the temperature of an atom? and what happens if you 'heat' or 'cool' one down? i guess that is that you are saying that is how they use a technique to 'capture' one. still it's fascinating.

i'm guessing it's just a term they use to mean that they stop and slow down a photon to where they are able to capture it instead of it moving to fast in conjunction with the atom. isn't a photon the basic unit of light where light is simply a vibration of small electromagnetic particles that make up atoms? where light doesn't exist and is simply a flow in one direction of particles where it can pass through some things and be stopped by others but it exists as waves of particles where the atom doesn't have to move and only the particles that make up atoms have to move? which would explain why light that goes through air and other things doesn't effect the matter it passes through.

of course that couldn't be true because light passes through space, so it has to be an actual particle.

of course some people have theorized that atoms don't exist as anything but vibrations, and that if you slow down the atom it would cease to exist because it wouldn't vibrate any more. such as that fire doesn't exist except as chemical exchange of molecules and vibrations of molecules rapidly with heat and light exchanging as well. if you slow down fire it goes out because it has no 'properties' of it's own it is simply a changing property of other elements. where as a water molecule exists and has properties of it's own as it's atom bonds represent, but water itself only exists as ice, water, or vapor in the form in which it's molecules exchange, and ice, water, or vapor have no dynamic properties of their own except in the properties of h20 in the settings provided. only by comparing the properties of h20 in the settings where it exists as ice, water, or gas to other molecules or elements and the settings in which these other elements take the form of solid, liquid, or gas does it stand out and have unique properties.

in fact buddha was one such person that thought that atoms didn't exist by them self in any way except such as vibrations. and buddha took that a step further and said not only do atoms exist only in comparison to each other as they appear to have constant form vibrating and bouncing off one another creating properties. but that mind also doesn't truly exist except in comparison to other aspects of mind, and that the minds true existence only exists in what it does in comparison to everything else separating it and giving it the 'illusion' of identity

of course since we don't know what the mind is in the first place, we can't figure out how it compares from form of mind to another. some say the mind is simply a flow of electric charges and chemical changes and that it doesn't exist at all in the same way the physical world doesn't exist as you see it.

any way I'm getting way off topic here. Lol still interesting article

Here is a very interesting article from Popular Mechanics on a Dr. Ning Li and her AC Gravity. It was published back in October 1999 and I’m not aware of any current follow-up on it so take it for what it’s worth.

However, it does seem to indicate that we’ve known some pretty far out stuff for a long time already, the principle behind her work having been around since the 1920’s. It was discovered by an East Indian Physicist named Dr. Bose and called Bose-Einstein Condensate because of Einstein’s influence on getting it published. The article indicates that we are finally capable of getting to some amazing technology, stuff that was laughed and scoffed at if not downright dangerous to even talk about not long ago; either that or Dr. Ning Li is one courageous individual for starting on this technology today.

The basic premise behind her research is that it may be possible to make a kind of gravity field by getting a large number of atoms to spin coherently so that their individual tiny gravities combine like photons to make a laser beam only this beam would be a beam of gravity instead of a beam of light.

Dr. Ning Li’s first idea for an application is to use this gravity field to keep micro meteors from breaching the hull of space stations. However, I can hardly imagine that anyone reading this article cannot see the real implications of her pursuit. To think that Dr. Ning Li herself only sees in her research the anemic application of a safety shield for space stations and not the OBVIOUS implication to interplanetary and interstellar travel would be to have to call Einstein stupid and that probably isn’t desirable.

Before I read this article I was thinking that it may be anywhere from 300 to 1000 years before we even get to the principle involved in such a possibility to master gravity. Now I’m thinking that it shouldn’t be more than 300 years before we establish Official Contact with civilizations on other worlds.

It’s quite remarkable what the difference is between knowing how something works as compared to not knowing how something works. Actually it’s kind of ‘astronomically’ mind boggling what the difference is. One second you’re groveling around in absolute ignorance not even aware of let alone entertaining the possibility of something. The next moment you’re “Walking on Water” with the best of them, simply because someone pointed out to you “HOW” it’s done.

So, I hope Dr. Ning Li is safe now and that she is really the official break through to this amazing technology. I hope the reason that we haven’t heard any follow-up on her is because she has just meet with a little more technical difficulty then she foresaw and that it’s not an indication of how much some “Official” organizations may need some updating if not major upgrading themselves about how to appreciate such a break through in technology.

In any case, this is one of those articles for me that I can’t escape from its real implications and therefore inspirations. It has fast becoming a major part of my repertoire of references. You’ll find it posted on my blog roll. Do expect to see it on many of my future ranting as a reference for supporting my own ideas about what our world is getting to today.

In the mean time I hope as many people as possible read this inspiring article and please do feel free to comment on it. It’s just one of those articles and subjects that peaks one’s amazement bone and sends us off on all those childhood fantasies that Hollywood special effects has learned to capitalizes on making us still wonder as adults:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel that Dr. Ning Li was really onto something here.

The basic premise behind her research is that it may be possible to make a kind of gravity field by getting a large number of atoms to spin coherently so that their individual tiny gravities combine like photons to make a laser beam only this beam would be a beam of gravity instead of a beam of light.

So high spin atoms can cause anti gravity effects.

According to Li, rotating ions create a gravitomagnetic field perpendicular to their spin axis. If a large number of ions could be aligned, (in a Bose-Einstein condensate) the resulting effect would be a very strong gravitomagnetic field producing a strong repulsive force. The alignment may be possible by trapping superconductor ions in a lattice structure in a high-temperature superconducting disc.

this is right in line with the ORME's/M-state material that david hudson & barry carter have both refered to as having anti-gravity superconductive like properties, by putting atoms into a high spin state.

I see that different fields of scientific study are observing the same things & approaching it with different methods. Which is awesome!

& i also see that it is not being introduced into mainstream academia here in the US. Which is not awesome at all.

Many of the original articles covering the original lab tests on site, in american anti gravity and popular mechanics have been removed as well....

What do you think you know about anti-gravity, lattice ions, BEC condensates & micro clusters, m-state & torsion fields?

BUMP BUMP
