CPU Cooling
    #1618324 - 06/08/03 02:25 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Ok I think I have done something stupid, I took the fan of my xp2200 cpu to check the serials ect to see if it can be over clocked. But on the fan i noticed a small piece of pink sticker that had melted a bit so i removed it. Since then my cpu is starting to get to hot even though the fan ect has been put on properly and my cpu is at the normal settings. So was that sticker thing important ?

thanks

Go to a computer store and get a tube of heat transfer grease. I don't know the exact name for it. Put a SMALL dab on between the CPU and the heat sink.

I have seen it called thermal compound and heat sink grease.

Thermal was the word I was looking for.

Damn mental blocks.

If your buying thermal grease - get Arctic Silver 3, IMHO it's the best CPU/heatsink conductor of heat you can get.

Well at the computer shop they only had some thermal pads, that was a dam pain to put on cos they where sticking too much to the plastic it came on. But the temp on my cpu is still too high at about 48-50. I cant seem to get it any lower and this is also bringing up the system temp to about 43. Any ideas i could realy do with bringing the lot down to 35-40.

thanks

I'd clean off that thermal pad and order some Arctic Silver from  here it's less than ?6 and will last you ages.
Download the instructions from  here and apply Arctic Silver as instructed.
Then sit back and marvel at your cpu's lower temps
It's a bit more time consuming than just throwing a thermal pad on, but it's well worth the time and effort.

What temp was your system running at before you took the HSF off and had to bung a new thermal pad on?

It was about 50 so I had to take my case and move my psu cos it was getting to hot even with additional internal blowers. So all that effort reduced it to about 40 but my messing around screwd things, ow well I am gona try that Arctic silver then see how that goes.

Thanks

40c isn't bad especially if it was under load  and I think that the core on the 2200  should  run a bit cooler than the core on my old school 1700 (34c idle/ 39c under load - with cheap and cheerful ?10 HSF combo). Any other questions just PM me

Oh just ta let you know everything is now a bit cooler my system is now at 42-43 and my cpu is at 43-45 probably depends on the weather. One more thing Ha ha ha AMD, I tryed to unlock my processor with some conductive ink on the L1 contacts. This just dis-enabled all my pci slots until I removed the ink from my processor and thank god my system is still working properly with no errors of any kind.

You can't just use ink to join the Althlon XP bridges, you need something to fill the gaps first.

If want some real cooling, water cooling is good. Innovatek makes some of the best kits and the Corsair Hydrocool200 looks like an ass kicker too.
