my friend had a large set of cakes grown with sweet'n'low.. colonization was fast but this could have been do to the fact it was mycellium innoculation. They died savagely in a casing experiment, so there is no way to know if they would've produced good pins had they been properly cared for.

BoomerZ how much experience do you have using your current casing method? Perhaps some other factor caused the small mushrooms.. I really can't see how sweetener would cause good rhizo growth but suddenly damage the fruiting process.

I would'nt use any hazardous chemical sweetener for mush cultiv.. Sweet'n Low contains either " Aspartame ", or " Sodium Sacharrin", both bad but Sacharrin is worse. Of course the studies they did were on rats, and the rats did develop cancerous tumors. Some might say well "Heck" Im not a rat, but if these aritficial sweeteners have carcinogenic capabilites at any level I would'nt advice there use at all...

Im sure that once used by the mushroom for food those would both be broken down. Besides, everything is carcinogenic..even city air has been proven carcinogenic. Anyways..i used a casing layer of vermic. I presterilized it in an oven at 350 geg. for 20 minutes. Then put a layer on the botom, moistened w/ h2o2/water. put cakes peices on, another moist layer...colonized in 4 days, "birthed", massive pinhead formation. Most aborted. PF strain. Again..it may have been a humidity factor, or maybe the casing layer was too dry, it might not have been a thick enough layer..ect ect..but the most outstanding thing is the sweetner.

high levels of simple sugars lead to mutation. I think this is what you ran into.
