Nader endorses Camejo's bid for gubernatorial race

Nader endorses Camejo's bid for gubernatorial race
By Dogen Hannah Contra Costa Times

SAN FRANCISCO - Green Party national standard-bearer Ralph Nader endorsed Peter Camejo's gubernatorial bid Tuesday -- then was hit in the face with a frosted cake.

The odd assault capped a press conference in which Nader and Camejo attacked Democratic Gov. Gray Davis and GOP candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Camejo also rejected the notion that his candidacy will merely help Republicans seize power in the Oct. 7 recall election. Democrats will have no one to blame but themselves if that happens, he said.

Camejo, who placed third in last year's gubernatorial race with 5.3 percent of the vote, said Davis' mismanagement of the state enabled the GOP-backed recall drive to capitalize on Californians' discontent.

"What is opening the door to the Republican Party is the Democratic Party," Camejo said.

As the press conference ended, a man threw a cake at Nader, hitting him in the face. The assailant said nothing and dashed from the room.

Nader has been attacked before, albeit rhetorically. He was tagged a spoiler for his 2000 presidential candidacy, which critics said cost Democrat Al Gore votes.

Nader rejected the label Tuesday, saying the Democrats' loss to George W. Bush resulted from Gore's lackluster campaign and other factors. The Green Party should not step aside in the recall election to help Democrats, he said.

"The difference between the Green Party platform and Gray Davis is the difference between day and night," Nader said.

The recall election's outcome is far from clear, but Camejo's candidacy could influence it, political observers said.

If voters boot Davis, the replacement candidate with the most votes becomes governor. With a half-dozen leading candidates and scores of others splitting the vote, the margin for victory might be as slight as the support Camejo commands.

So far, Schwarzenegger dominates the field.

In a recent poll, 42 percent of respondents said there was a good chance they would vote for the actor. That was a 20 percentage point advantage over the next candidate, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat.

Yet the actor's blockbuster standing could slip as more is learned about him, giving Bustamante a chance to catch him in the two-month campaign.

"It's hard for me to imagine that when all is said and done anybody will get anywhere near 40 percent of the vote," said Larry Gerston, political science professor at San Jose State. "This is an extraordinary fluid situation."

Camejo contended Schwarzenegger is "at the top of his polls" and his support of Proposition 187, a 1994 initiative that aimed to cut off public services to undocumented immigrants, will cost him Latinos' support.

"He is dead meat," Camejo said.

In the recall election, amid deep discontent with Davis, Camejo might appeal to more than just Green Party voters. His message could resonate with disaffected Democrats, spurring them to vote for the recall or for Camejo instead of Bustamante.

"I think if Davis should go down, Democrats will be as angry with Camejo as they were with Ralph Nader," said Jack Pitney, government professor at Claremont McKenna College. "In a narrow election he would be a leading candidate for scapegoat status."

Camejo said he and Independent candidate Arianna Huffington will support each other's campaigns. That could further hurt Democrats, said Jaime Regalado, director of the Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs at Cal State Los Angeles.

"If they're able to pool their resources," Regalado said, "that probably means a good thing symbolically for third-party candidates and a bad thing for Bustamante."

Of course Nader cost Gore the election. Just like Ross Perot fucked over the Republicans the same way. ...Ralph Nader is a moron.

So do you think we should remain a bi-partisan system, sticking to Democrats and Republicans?

Throw 'em all out! I may not agree with everything that Ralph Nader says, but he is a helluva lot more honest than 99.99% of the Democrats or Republicans currently living on the backs of the taxpayers.

Nader didnt take votes away from anyone. Gore doesnt own any votes other than the ones he wins. Besides, we shouldnt settle for the lesser of two evils. I'm voting Camejo come Oct.

I didn't say that. I meant most people who voted for Nader would have voted for Gore if they had the choice between Gore and Bush.

Gore cost Nader the election. I'm sure Gore voters would vote for Nader if they had to choose only between Nader & Bush.

I wouldn't be so sure. Remember Gore is much closer to a moderate than Nader.
