California Gubernatorial Debate
    #1881824 - 09/04/03 06:32 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I came here this afternoon expecting full well that
surely someone would have brought this up...

here's my recap.

Cruz Bustamante (D) is a slimeball. He was condescending,
evasive and clearly without remorse for any role he's
played in the state's downfall. I did not like his attitude,
or body language and found little solace in his stance
on the issues.

Ariana Huffington (Ind). Hmm, she's a tough one. I liked her
stance on a number of issues, but I can't think of a more
annoying person. Part of me thinks that despite her values
she'd be completely impotent in the capital, but another
part of me thinks that if she had the assembly on lock
down they'd all eventually crack under the pressure of her
fran drescher like voice. Fuck, I'd vote for her if she'd just
shut her yip.

Uberoff (Ind?) - He's like ross perot minus the crazy.

Camejo (Green) - This guy right here seemed like he was
either going to break down and cry or tear into a fit of rage
everytime a question came to him. Clearly very passionate
about california politics, very smart, but kept running out of
clock, constantly cut off before completing responses. I just
wish the green party would execute people, then I'd be all
for them.

McClintock (R) - Great guy, this is who the california republican
party should be getting behind. Above average speaker and
a true republican. Constantly took the line of shrinking state
government and allowing more control on the local level. For
environmental protection, death penalty, equal legal protection
for same sex couples (but no marriage) and medical marijuana.
even addressed federal intervention into state MM cases and
criticized bush/cheney for promising stronger local governments
when they've done just the opposite.

I feel like I'm missing somebody...besides Arnold, who opted
out of the debate.

all and all I thought it was sad and pathetic.

the first half, it reminded me why I am against the recall;
there just doesn't seem to be a clear and promising candidate
in the list of possible replacements that gives me any more
hope than I have now that the spotlight's been put back on
davis' office.

but during the second half, a number of good points were
raised to debunk the current administration along with some
really good ideas and responses from camejo and mclintock
with promising solutions to the current crises.

I went in against the recall and for bustamante.

now I'm not so sure on the first point and positive
that bustamante is not my man on the second.

any other californians out there? SS7...

I didn't watch the debates, but if McClintock is consistent with those stances on issues you mention, he may just become the first Republican I vote for.

the only thing that worries me about republicans
these days are their christian leanings.

I was a bit concerned when he specified that he
was for equal protection and rights for same sex
couples but against marriage...sanctity...man and
a woman and all that...which is basically extending
one's parochial beliefs into the secular institution of
marriage.

but as long as they get the same protection and
benefits, in light of his stance on the larger issues,
I can deal.

Al Gore basically said the same thing during the 2000 debate. I think it has little to do with their own religious beliefs and more to do with the fact that the majority of Americans are against gay marriage.

pandering to the polls, surely, but I think
there is also a degree of personal religion
that comes into play.

it will be interesting to see how all this pans
oot.
