Aged rye whiskey..

So a friend of mine acquired some old rye bottled in bond from a deceased family members attic. we have no real idea of how old this is and would like to find out. it still has the gov labels on the caps.

Distilled at DSP-ILL.-2 By

Bottled at DSP-KY-49
Owensboro KY

Does anyone have any idea how i could go about trying to figure out their age? I've done a few searches myself but haven't found anything helpful yet.

Anything that could point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

take some pictures of the bottle and label, style should let us deduce around what era it was bottled in. It won't be easy to determine how long it was aged in a barrel ,though.

Looks amazing. I don't know what the years of those bottles are, but I do know that Rittenhouse has been acquired by Heaven Hill Distilleries. The aging stops when it enters the bottle. The bottled in bond strength(100 proof) isn't rare. I know I could pick it up at my local liquor store right now for $22. They've updated the label since then, but it still says Continental Distilling today.



The bottle on the left looks like it could be before Heaven Hill took over. I was unable to find the date of when it happened, but if you like rye whiskey, see if you can find a bottle in bond strength at your local liquor store and do a side by side.

Both bottles are the same i just turned one around backwards for the sake of one photo. I do believe these are from before heaven hill took over which was in the late seventies or early eighties from what i read earlier.

I do suppose an email to the manufacturer could prob sorry this out.

You should maybe taste one of the old bottle whiskey against a new bottle from heaven hill.  If they were up in a cold/hot attic for that long the old one may be either mellow or seriously oxidized/nasty.

Personally I love rye in beer and have brewed maybe 10 beers with it.  This year I made perhaps my second best beer ever with a barrel aged russian imperial stout aged a month in a rye whiskey freshly dumped 8 gallon barrel.  No rye in the stout maybe next time.  Planning to do another 10 gallon batch to add to another freshly dumped 100% aged rye whiskey barrel soon.  Just so good.
