Sterility of spore prints?
    #1803692 -

Say someone was wanting to buy a spore print in a country where they are a little hard to come by and they were offered some prints that are according to the person who has it "non sterile but very nice" would that have too much of a risk of being contamned? Or does it not matter too much with prints?

I guess i will have to, hopefully international mail doesnt take too long then.

Just to clarify would it be too risky as far as contamn goes to use non sterile prints? Or are you just saying use a vendor for a reliable quality strain?

you mean to use a print that is already contamed to try to grow with it?If that is what you were asking I would try to germinate them it may contam if so take some of the clean growth and transfer it to a sterilized substrate and it should grow clean after that.(if that is what you are asking)

nor did you Ravinoff....

No i dont know either way whether it is contaminated or not the person who offered to provide them to me just said they were "non-sterile". Obviously i dont want to ask them directly whether that makes them useless for cultivation as they are only supplying them for legal microscopy purposes.

OK thanks for the help i am well aware of the sponsors and their quality products, i just wanted to know if it was worth the risk using a print that wasnt sterile as it would obviously be much easier for me to get them from someone in the same country as me rather than order from overseas. Thanks anyway.

how would you know if the print was steril unless you tried it?and yes it's always worth a try it,you won't know 100% untill you try

The person who offered to sell them to me said that they are "non sterile, but very nice" as i said in my original post. But yeah i may as well try and if it doesnt work out chalk it up as a learning experience

I wouldn't pay for a non-steril print but if you do and you get some contams like I said just take some of the clean mycelia growth and transfer it to a sterilized substrate and it should grow clean after that and take a spore print a the clean shrooms and there you go.

I make absolutely NO attempt to take sterile prints. I simply lay the cap on a piece of typing paper in the open room, and place a coffee filter over the top to allow air exchange, and keep the worst of the dust, or bugs off it. All you have to do is scrape some spores onto agar, and as soon as the spores germinate, grab a small piece of the mycelia and transfer it to a new petri dish. Do this a few times and you have a perfectly clean strain to work with. Just remember, always transfer healthy mycelia away from contams into a new dish. Never the other way around. If you try to move the contam, you will just spread it all over. If you're wanting to make a spore syringe, you need a sterile print. If you use agar, it doesn't matter. Hope this answered your question.

Ok thanks that answers my question more. I was planning on making a spore syringe and following the basic PF Tek but obviously i do need a sterile print to do that.

Seeing as this will be my first attempt at growing it would probably be best to go to the extra hassle of getting a good sterile print and doing it that way, rather than messing around with petri dishes and agar which i have no idea about.
