Ok, what is it please?

Came across a 15 foot or so wide patch of these plants in a wooded area with a small opening and am having a heck of a time finding out what they are. I grabbed one and temporarily transplanted it along my back fence. Hoping someone here may shed some light.

They are tall, about 30", very thick and have flower/seed pods on top. I must have missed the flowers but at lest one of the plants had pods that had flat, spade-like black seeds in them. Also, the plants have no leaves.

The flowers on the plant in these pics have wilted away but hoping they are enough to identify. The bulb is about the size of a baseball and has the look and feel of an onion. Whole plant is quite succulent. I have a sinus infection so my sense of smell is kaput :tongue:.

I put a pencil in the pics for scale. So, is it an onion? Garlic? Lily of some sort? Any help appreciated.

Well, the seed pods and the general look of the plant remind me quite a bit of amaryllis. It's not native to USA, but it's very common in cultivation and often 'escapes' into the wild where the climate is good. The absence of leaves is unusual tough...

Yeah, I missed that at first... But seeing some pictures, apparently it's not uncommon for the flower stalks to grow on their own. I'm pretty sure it's an amaryllis, or maybe some closely related species, try to compare your finds with some photos.

I just looked them up and you sir, just might be on to something. Wiki even mentions it being called a March lily due to it being able to flower sometime in March and yes, in comparing several photos, it sure does look like it.

Will keep researching to be sure but it doesn't appear to be ethno at all...but still a pretty flower.

Amaryllis belladonna or "naked lady" doesn't grow leaves until after it's flowered. It's become naturalized and widespread on the west coast (and probably elsewhere).

Pretty cool....and now it seems to have found a home in South Central Florida...someone must have tossed a plant maybe or seeds at some point and they took off. They seemed to be well established in the spot that I found them in. Large plants and haphazardly growing all throughout a 15 to 20 foot wide section of the wooded area I was in. Lots of other plants I managed to find in there as well.

Almost a flower growers paradise in this spot. Found some Hibiscus, Lantana, Madagascar Periwinkle, Passion Flower, Various grape vines, ferns galore and even a few Prickly Pear. Needless to say, I picked a few of each to add to the same plants that I already have...I figure if they're doing well all by themselves they should flourish with some TLC. I'll be taking a walk back through there again to see what else I can find for my garden and / or dinner table. :smile:

if it is Amaryllis belladonna then it's poisonous so be careful with it... keep your animals from eating it or they'll get sick at least

It seems to be for sure Amaryllis so I'll have to keep an eye on the dogs I guess, although they don't seem to be interested in any of my plants thus far except for the grass itself...all 3 of them seem to love chewing on my damn grass :mad:.

haha yeah dogs seem to like grass for some reason, they shouldn't mess around with it unless they are a pup or something....
