Wrong...  :facepalm3: for you too, sir

Watch the vid link I posted further up this thread.  It shows you exactly how it works.

I can't see the vid, but common sense would tell me that if something is sucking air up into the unit, it would have to come from somewhere. So I'd think the air would come from around the person working and suck into the machine. That would be used to contain bio-hazardous vapors. I don't see how it could work any other way

Both the Biological Safety Cabinet in the video and the one in the PDF are Class II.  The hand drawn pics in the PDF do look a little confusing, but once ya see it in action it all makes sense.

Also, I'm by no means trying to get people to buy this over a Laminar flow hood...it's seriously overkill. But if someone is offered a deal on one (and you have the room for it ) I say....do it!

I'd like to take more accountability for making this decision, but I'm grateful for all of the feedback. It is appropriate for sterile work, is it not? Isn't that the whole point of the unit? It was previously used for grafting tissue samples or something.

I just took a look at her today, and the filter needs to be replaced and the motor needs to be checked out, but it should be fine. The last service date is from 1995, and the comments read: "Decreased motor blower speed to rebalance airflow."

The pdf isn't confusing at all.
Dirty air is marked by the blacked out arrows & clean air is the outlined white arrows.
You can see at 1:22-1:25, when the technician pulls out the dry ice + water, that the "smoke" gets pulled back into the unit.
That's exactly why it will not work for mycology.
Also, those units are used for bio-hazardous materials.
Not something I'll bring into my house.

You can  :beatadeadhorse: all you want. But, that unit will NOT work for mycology.

It's getting sucked down, not inside.  Plus even the subtitles tell you the proper way of handling your specimens for the highest protection from outside contamination.  The guy lifting the smoke high off the working surface and then pulling it outside was visually showing you how the suction up here (while still present) is not as strong.

YES...this means you have to know how to work your equipment in order to benefit from it.  It is NOT idiot proof...obviously.

At $200, it's not as if I'm making a huge investment, and I'd like to reiterate that I'm only considering this because of the price tag--otherwise, I wouldn't be considering it. However, it will still be a hassle to get into my home, so I'd like to have an idea of whether or not this is suitable rather than learning the hard way.

I'm not "not" taking your advice, but I'm considering what other member's are saying along with my own understanding of how this thing works. Doesn't this create a sterile work environment beneath the hood? My understanding is that it does, and if I'm right, then why would it not be appropriate for mycology? Also, in the video at 4:04, isn't that a bio safety cabinet?

It doesn't though... It pulls contaminants past your culture and then into the filter... It filters the air AFTER it goes past your work... You want the air to be scrubbed before it hits your workspace, not after....

As TL has said along with me, this is for containment, to keep you safe while working with hazardous materials. a flowhood pushes those contams away and scrubs the air first to ensure your cultures are clean.

I'm with TL, be hardheaded if you want and waits $200, I don't care, I'm just letting you know that the other information is blatantly WRONG.

Jesus, I'm not being hardheaded. Cool it. I'm trying to make a rational decision based on accurate information. I know that this is for bio-hazard containment.

Ok. Pretend that I'm mentally retarded but that I'm perfectly literate. Looking at the manual, I see clean, sterile air be pushed down through the solid work surface. I do see dirty air coming in through the opening, but this does not appear to be drawn across the work surface. Is this not the case? What seems obvious to me, at least, is that this would be appropriate for working with contaminated specimens.

You might want to watch the video that shows how this thing works before you post.... :40-1:00 should make this clear. It does NOT pull contams past the work space. Its basically a vertical laminar flow hood that also has HEPA suction vents around the perimeter of the work space. HEPA filtered Air blows DOWN onto the workspace and then right in the middle it splits and goes to the suction vents on either side. Any contams coming from the outside near the operator get sucked into the side vents right under the opening in the hood.

TL, look at page 15 of the PDF again. The area that shows the short filled in black arrows DO NOT go across the work space, the PDF shows them going UNDER the workspace in the ducting under the workspace from the front suction vent indicated by the "////" that goes back to the HEPA for filtering. The long solid black lines do not indicate airflow, those are just the arrows they used to point to the work surface and the ideal workzone. As for 1:22-1:25 seeing smoke getting pulled into the unit, you must have just ate some shrooms cause that portion of the video shows nothing of the sort, you see it getting blown DOWN from the flow from above and towards the bottom suction vents. 1:30-1:45 show this to clearly be a bunk claim.

I don't know how you guys can argue this way when the video clearly shows you are incorrect. Arguing that this unit works differently than clearly shown in the video then getting butthurt about it when people say otherwise is like watching a bunch of holocaust documentaries and then saying that shit didn't happen, then throwing a fit when someone looks at you funny.

You and I both have the same understanding of the functionality, and if someone can disprove this, then please do so in the same amount of detail and using clear examples. My other question is this: why would someone design a unit such that contaminated or unclean air is forced over the work surface by a pressure gradient? That wouldn't make sense to me, therefore I'm skeptical that this would be a problem.

Wait, so is the final consensus that it may or may not be suited for mycology, but that either way, it's probably not worth the trouble and that there are better options available?

Yes, it's like using a butterknife instead of a flat screwdriver. Both work but one is the right tool and you don't look like a tweeker when working on it....
