No.
That is meant for biological research, which means it's pulling the air up & into the unit.
You want a laminar flowhood that pushes air towards you through a HEPA filter, not the other way around.

It just popped up on craigslist. Sigh. When something seems too good to be true...it is every damn time.

It will work better than a flow hood.  It provides HEPA clean air from up top.  It sucks in the dirty air that is near the cabinet opening and keeps it away from the area you are working inside.  It's a sweet piece of equipment.

I need this to be spelled out for me: so is this definitely acceptable for sterile work such as transfers and agar? It just popped up for a ridiculous price, and I'm going to pull the trigger right now if it is. Thanks

It's a Laminar hood on steroids.  Not only does it keep contams out it also keeps them in!  You could even open a tray fully contaminated with green mold inside that cabinet without worry of it spreading it through your entire workplace. 

If you found a working one for a good price I'd grab it.  Then show it off with vids of you using it!

Wow. How much would you expect to pay for this? Because the asking price seems to good to be true.

There is one on Ebay for $999.  The seller has not tested it and does not guarantee it will ever work......so start from there.  :smile:

I just scheduled an appointment to go inspect it tomorrow. But the price is set at $200...

That's awesome.  Now start looking up "How to properly inspect a Bio-safe cabinet"  Id also ask if it's possible to turn it on.  Then do what you see in that video w/ some dry-ice and water.  Also, make sure to ask if it has the filters.  :goodluck:

Yeah. Right. I need an earpiece or something with someone in a van feeding me instructions. This is a piece of equipment that I know nothing about. I'm open to any suggestions as to what I should check for and how to properly inspect it.

inspect any filters, and fan motors, electrical house.  most motors can be replaced inexpensively but who wants to do that on something like this?

i rather just order a real actual flow hood, for the $350 or so it costs on fungiperfecti or something

I suppose I would too, but the lowest price I saw on the website was ~$550 without a shipping quote, and this would be marginally cheaper for something that is a superior piece of laboratory equipment.

Absolutely, that is a class II biological safety cabinet and more than acceptable for mycology. However, it's a much more complicated device than your typical laminar flow hood and extra care needs to be taken to certify that the interior of the hood is totally sterile. It's probably better if you construct your own laminar flow hood; there are instructions to do that around here.

Can I guess, honestly, that this over the top for someone who is just a hobbyist? I was never considering a bio safety cabinet until I saw the price. I would certainly use it, but I'd be moving it into a small space where it would be completely out of place. Frankly it would look ridiculous. Are there any other practical home uses for this? A bio safety cabinet sitting in my apartment would look suspicious, although I would be using it for some perfectly legal activities...and some not.

I've been looking at some flow hoods on ebay around the 350-500 mark as well. They're normally $2000+ and I can get it new (<2 hours use) shipped to my house for under 500. My issue is that even with a house, WTF am I gonna do with a 2'X4' flow hood lmao!!! I'll probably wait until I buy a house and just use the "portable clean room tent" that i'm making instead.

:facepalm: noobs giving bad advice to other noobs.
That is NOT a laminar flowhood meant for mycology purposes.
It is meant to keep the lab technician,  you, safe from harmful bacteria/viral cultures you're working with.
It pulls air from behind you, across your body & then up into the flowhood,
which is the complete opposite of what you want your flowhood to do for mycology.
You want dirty air in through the blower, cleaned by the filter, passing your agar/jars/etc. then hitting you.
If you all don't believe me, USTF & filter by "rogerrabbit," he's answered this exact same question about the exact same type of unit.
