the way i see it the record companies are the ones stealing from the bands. I used to play in a band and we had a record deal going and it was like 2$ per cd goes to the band with the cd at 12$. There's no way to convince me that packaging, a one time art fee, and the cost of cd production and advertisement requires 6 times the costs of the artists effort. I'm guessing at least 6 of those dollars went in the labels pocket if not more. the other two get split between 4 members who also have to pay for merchandise, equiptment maintenance, tour gas etc. Unless you're fucking U2 or Metallica, artists don't make jack shit on music sales. We earned more money selling tickets to warehouse shows than we would have made off the projected "1000 cd's" we were supposed to sell.

This. While Courtney Love might have exaggerated a little bit, this is more like what really happens when a band gets a record deal.

Plenty of bands tour for fucking nothing. They get their music out, they get to travel, they have a place to sleep each night and they have food. It doesn't cost much to load up a van with people and equipment and drive 4 or 5 hours. If you're at that point, you should be able to demand at least enough money to cover a cheap hotel, gas and food.

I personally know a local 8-piece band that plays within a 500-mile radius. They produced their own album (paid for by selling tickets to shows), make their own merch and do well for themselves. They all still need a job, but their music turns a profit, however small, each time. If they can do it, splitting the money that far, there's no reason in the world why a 3-or-4-piece band can't.

I don't feel bad stealing from record companies. If they go out of business, music will not stop happening. It won't even slow down. The artists will just start getting paid properly.
