Don't sign to a big label and offer incentives for me to purchase your music and I will. One major reason why I don't listen to 99.999999999999% of musicians signed to major labels. They wanted to hit big and have millions of fans, so millions of fans will download their shit illegally, without offering any incentives not to.

Pretty simple.

BTW, I buy A LOT of music, but I download a lore more. You can credit and blame the internet for that.

I think the people will call the ISPs' bluff, it's really not in their interests to kick off their best customers.

The customer often doesn't have a choice. If the ISP is the local phone company and they have the best connection, you either play their game or you lose access. And often the ISP doesn't have a choice either. If it comes down to legal action, the ISP may have to cut off the customer whether they want to or not.

And for the record, yes, pirating is theft. Any honest, objective, unbiased assessment can't help but conclude that it is theft. But I'm not going to get into yet another debate on this. This thread is just to warn people who do pirate to take steps and not assume they won't get clobbered by legal action.

I agree this is probably the best way for a band to market itself, but this is hard to do. A bunch of starving musicians don't have the means to put on a big concert. Record companies do. Even if you are modestly successful at self-marketing on the internet, when your fans are demanding concerts all over the country and you don't have the money to underwrite them, you have little choice but to take the record company's offer.

And this is the part that bugs me. It's like meeting some guy who just ran out of gas and doesn't have any money. He has $1000 worth of his work tools in the trunk. You offer him $20 for gas in exchange for all his tools and he's left with little choice but to give them to you for $20.

That's fucked up and unfair, but life has never been fair. However, I also see that it's not fair to rip off a record company, but like the guy who ran out of gas, there's shit all they can do to stop it. One more fucked up thing in a fucked up world. The fuck cuts both ways. :hehehe:

I didn't even read that thing. I torrent alllll the time, never once gotten a virus, i suspect it is because I use a mac and not a PC.

The industry has changed. Musicians make more money playing shows.
Change forces adaptation.  The artist simply has to change their approach. Be realistic. If its possible to download music people are gonna do it. No sense in accusing.

Simple. They join your swarm, download from you and others in the swarm the data representing the music and they recognize it's one of their songs. They know they haven't given anyone permission to torrent that song, so it must be illegal. They even have your IP address to go after you with a legal sledge hammer.

This isn't about viruses, though there is no reason a torrent can't infect you with a virus. This thread is about the record company detecting you sharing files and sending legal action your way. That can be as innocuous as a letter from your ISP to a civil lawsuit and possibly even a criminal charge.

There is a long list of people right now who owe the record companies thousands of dollars after they were successfully sued. Be careful. You sound overconfident.

If you really want to support the musicians, go to a show or buy a t-shirt. More of that money goes to them than record sales.


This is becoming the standard business model in parts of the music industry. You give the music away — look at VEVO on YouTube, or the fact that people post music all the time and it stays up because they let them. I put a video clip from a movie, and it was blocked from viewing within a day. Why fight something that gives you more exposure, and creates an audience that you can milk for tickets to your show?

I think they probably have to find a torrent first, examine it, and if it is violating their copyright, go back and look for instances of it on the network. Even a song/movie ripped from a CD/DVD is going to have a different data signature due to compression settings and such,

Easy to do on any public tracker. I can do it in about 30 seconds on Pirate Bay. Why would it be any harder for a record company's IT guys?

Again, very simple. The title of the torrent is a dead giveaway. Then they confirm the title matches the actual song by simply listening to it.

This isn't rocket science. Read the OP. They are ALREADY DOING THIS right now. Any one of us can do it with any torrent client by joining a swarm from Pirate Bay.
