wavy cap - id help please

Hey everyone.
another little hunt today found me the mushroom below. what i assume is p.foenisecii, but a weird one at that.
my guide book says "the gills are eventually dark brown, rather than the black of typical panaeolus species...." about p.foenisecii, but my example had creamy coloured gills.

i left it where it was, however i can take a spore print.

weather: hot and sunny, last week saw lots of rain.
humidity: pretty humid for england
habitat: dense, healthy grass, close to an evergreen tree.
size: cap around 3.5 - 4cm in diameter, stem is about 4cm high and looks to be brittle and 'crunchy'

Looks like either a Collybia or Clitocybe, but, I am really unsure without a better description!

Definetly not a Ps. cyanescens or any active mushroom. Most likely not edible either.

Great picture though, very beautiful! :laugh:

I think we're all waiting on the spore print. Without that everything is just wild speculation.

angryshroom : from looking at my field guides Collybia's & Clitocybe's i couldn't match it up with any shown.

i am taking a spore print as i type this. i will post results later.
i disected the stem and inside it is white and fibrous, with a mushroomy/earthy smell. no apparent bruising.

on a side note, the same patch of grass yields hygrophorus conicus & psittacinus and what i think is Russula lepida.

and it also threw up this mutant which i have posted before:

OK, here's some things you should let us know.

Are the gills attached to the stem? The easiest way to find out is to cut the mushroom in half vertically and look.

Is there a ring on the stem? It could be as little as a few fibers of material that have mostly fallen off. If you don't know, say you don't know. It's best to check young specimens to find out.

When you say the spore print is light brown, how light? Is it paler than cinnamon? Is it paler than the cap color in the first photo you posted in this thread? Try to compare the color to something most people are likely to have seen.


I'm going to guess that you tried to identify it the way most beginners do - by comparing photographs to your specimen. To reliably identify you need to follow the tree structure that the names are based on. For example, the fact that this is a cap-and-stem mushroom with gills tells us (using the system outlined in Mushrooms Demystified) that it is among the Agaricales (the basic gilled mushrooms). The next thing to determine is the family. Depending on which reference you're using, there are 14 families. We need to place the mushroom into one of those. From there we get to genus, then species is last.

It probably looks like we just jump to the species (and with some very distinctive mushrooms we can), but whenever a mushroom is challenging you need to work your way down the taxonomic tree to classify it. Doing that, you can usually at least put the mushroom into a likely genus. With some good keys you can often get to species, even on unusual mushrooms.

Hi Toxicman, thanks for the tips.

the gills, after cutting it in half appear to be either adnate or adnexed. its hard to tell due to the cap turning upwards.
there was no ring on the stem and the young specimens have no ring either. neither did it have a volva or veil.

the spore print is a little darker than its cap colour, see first photo.
i put a tiny portion on my tongue, did not taste of much, certainly not hot or bitter.

my field guide has a key system at the front which i work through as much as possible.
my key came up with Bolbitiaceae when i chose the option of light brown spore print.
and the mid-brown to purple spore print option gave me Strophariaceae.
from looking through this, i think Hypholoma elongatum is a possible option.
to quote the book "at first bell shaped but later flattening" referring to the cap, and it is found "especially among moss".  which seems to be about right, the grass does have lots of moss in it. :smile:

thanks for your help toxicman, i'm going to do a search for pictures of Hypholoma elongatum and see what else i can come up with on it. i will post any results here.

well after looking at photos of Hypholoma elongatum i'm pretty sure my mushroom is not one of those. so does anyone have any clue as to what it could be?
