Spider mites and neem-oil?
    #17788468 -

I have fight against spider mites now long time. Problem for me is that I don't have got them away.. I have used several different insecticides, commercial chemicals and few organic too.

Now I am waiting mail cause I got neem-oil so it is my last chance to get them in control.

Does anyone have experience of using neem-oil to cactus? Is it as good as some internet sites says? What is the best way to use neem-oil with lophophora and ariocarpus species? cause they are sensitive with watering.

I read that pyrethrin should be able to kill spider mites but I don't have got good results. I would take any advice to get rid of spider mites or even get them to control. This long battle against these bugs are really starting to piss me off so I want to ask your tricks how to get spider mites away from cacti. What is the good way to use neem-oil with water?

Thanks if someone can help me with fight against spider mites.:sunny:

Water in as a systemic, 1 teaspoon to a litre, add some soap as as emulsifier.
It takes time to work on them, so repeat across a few waterings and it will help to break the cycle and cull the population.
Pyrethrin can work on mites but there is a chance of some being resistant.
Mites hate being wet, so you can dislodge them with water too.

So I can add neem-oil to water and give it to my cacti?

I have never used neem-oil but now it seems it my last chance to get spider mites in control.

They have been all around my cactus collection over a year and it's going to be very annoying. :mad2:

Lophophoras seems to suffer more than trichocerus maybe cause trichos are more resistant to water.

I am going to add neem-oil to water and give it to all my cactis, also I spray it to them. I tryed food oil too on few lophs and see what is happening. I just "paint" few lophs all around with food oil. I really don't know how resistant spider mites these are to insecticides. I have heard that some population are very resistant cause they have developed in gardens where are used commercial insecticides. Makes sense to me, fast evolving and adapting insects can develop good resistant to almost any poison there are available.

I don't have any other bugs cause I use commercial dimethoate insecticide to mealybugs, but it doesn't work these spider mites at all.

I hope neem-oil works, I just need to get it first.

Applying neem directly to the cacti stems can remove the waxy layer so take it easy if you use that method. Some species suffer more than others, and the oily water can dirty your lophs tufts. I'd dislodge them with a clean forceful jet of water. Maybe they all need to go for a shower  And then start to use the neem to for systemic protection/future prevention.

Many insecticides are no good for dealing with mites, and all the worthwhile miticides end up banned.

I have done it only for few smaller plants for testing and it's normal food oil, i don't know if it works, but somewhere was a method where was used food oil, but it's not for cactus. I dont have neem-oil yet. Should I wash small amount of food oil away from cactus? :awesome:

My plan is start using neem-oil when I got it. I have buyed it and should come to my mailbox soon.

Yes it might be wise to remove the food oil!
And the washing away of it will remove some mites at the same time.
Neem will take a while to start having an effect, so disrupting and moving the mites will slow any damage until then.

Just comes to my mind cause spider mites hate humid. Would it be reasonable to put moisture bag over the cactus after they have sprayed with pure water?

I think this but only keep the bag like over night and take is off during the day.

This would not probably even kill peyote or ariocarpus but does it makes harm to spider mites cause of moisture. Worth of trying?

What plants are they infesting? Try some nicotine extract to spray them with. You could also put it in a bag, blow some tobacco smoke into it and close it for 2 minutes. Nicotine kills almost any bug and prolly causes deficiencies in the eggs.
There is a group of insecticides called "neonicotines".

Few lophophora cactus are scarred badly. Grafted plants too but they grow faster than spider mites eat them. I usually spray grafted plants more. I just don't dare to use so much water on lophophora cause they are rotting easy in this climate.

Maybe I try to blow smoke in the bag and try kill spider mites. I have some time ago make tea from tobacco and sprayed it to cactus. Maybe I should do it again. Next watering times I use the neem-oil and hope to get some results. It should be good against them, but I need cause neem-oil is on the way by mail to me.

Trichocereus and few another cactus are doing ok or they don't have so much spider mite damage cause I water and spray them more than lophophora.

Dimethoate as chemical insecticide has work very good against every bugs, spider mites are resistant to it. Dimethoate smell is very bad. Also it causes health problems so I use when it's really need. It is commercial insecticide and controlled here. Only licensed growers or farmers should be able to use and poses it. Wrong use of dimethoate kills animals from wild. Birds, fishes and bees for example. Only fking bug what is resistant to it is spider mites. It's funny cause at bigger dosages it will kill humans too, or at least causes serious health problems but it ain't gonna slow spider mites at all.

I always jump to H2O2 when I have a problem and after a little research found it will kill spidemites however won't kill the eggs. I would spray at 3% concentration as I've never had problems with it affecting my plants however you might want to dilate it a bit.

I actually know H2O2 cause many my friends has used or use it when growing cannabis. It is easy way to clean water tanks. However, this same chemical is used almost every where. Even hair dye contains H2O2. I will try nicotine today.

I found really weird way to kill spider mites cause someone has written to internet that plants should be put in the tight box and fill it with CO2.. I actually have CO2 gas but I am really don't know does it actually work.

Damn it would be very cool to build whole eco-system to keep plants healthy. Maybe it would need small room to make and dozens of different species of bugs and keep the balance between hunters and preadors. That would be super organic cultivation :awesome:

Too baad.. Climate is completely opposite desert from hot deserts where cacti grows, I am so far north that climate is desert but arctic..:tongue2:

The best way to kill spider mites is to take a can of hairspray and a lighter, and then flame down the plants.

No the above advice is not true, however this is how stupid someone looks when they talk on something they have no knowledge on.

There is trusted cultivators/moderators damn near killing peoples plants by doing this.

Stop misinformation, they deserve being banned right now.

Yeah that should knock most bugs on their ass, I've blown smoke on a tiny caterpillar and it looked like it started tripping pretty bad and then it died.

neem oil is great. they will not become resistant to it. soil drench will take longer. I havent had any problem with direct spraying. make sure you apply at night so the sun wont burn your plants.
buy concentrate to save money. cold pressed oil is the best. also for faster growing cactus neem seed meal is a good fertilizer. neem will also fight root fungus and mealy bugs with soil drench.

I hope I get my neem oil soon.

There is something happening cause I paid to one shop already the neem oil, they are informed me that neem oil are mailed. For some reason it haven't come yet so I have to give spider mites some time.

Seems that pyrethrin spraying has helped littlebit. At summer cause there are lots of moskitos I use it and it will kill everything indoors. Atleast company says that their pyrethrin will kill spider mites.

I make watering, spraying and everything at the time when lights are off. But I have as powerful lights as cannabis growers use so soil will dry very fast. Temperature are +30-33C when lights are on. At night it drops somewhere to +20C. Pyrethrin have to use at night cause light will break the compound.

It's just sad to look pot where two peyotes.. They are very scarred. Almost one lophophora diffusa what have been my first lophophora has some scars. It have been 4months in +10-15C but sadly mealy bugs have been eating the roots whole dormant period. I take pictures from scars. Sad to look them..

ugh..

These willys are really ugly, another lophs are not so bad scarred but there are some scars. I have take this away from pot and keep the top of the cactus under running water to wash them away. Only time will tell does spider mites leave my cacti alone!

For spider mites i use azatrol a distillate of neem.  though my experience with this is cannabis related.

The hard part is getting em all.  They have a tendency to hide off in weird places close to your grow area waiting to re-infest.  You are at war man, i hope you win.

I have throw away various plants from my house cause they are probably everywhere. I think these are easier to get rid from cacti than cannabis. I have cultivated cannabis few years ago and they are really hard to get contact with insecticides from everywhere. Any good systemic chemical doesn't seem to work so I have to just wait to get neem oil.. Then start to use it and hope I see results after few weeks of giving neem oil with water.:tongue2:

I think the climate makes this cause this happens every winter. It's common here that spider mites are coming to plants, summer can be humid so they are not so big problem at summer. I have to get cacti away from dormant cause they were full of bugs. Now only spider mites are present but can't get humidity high before may or june. I have killed every chili plant and many other plants so I can get smaller chance of spider mites coming again... after I get them killed. Maybe it's impossible but before control have been working. Maybe I have got new more resistant spider mites than before.

One problem is big amount of various cacti so it is very hard to take care and look of every single cactus I have.

Actually I would buy bugs what are predators. Only problem is that I have used dimethoate so it will kill predator bugs. :smirk: ...and I can't stop now using it cause I know there are somewhere mealy bugs and their eggs. Sometimes I can spot few mealybugs in soil or some place where they are hiding.. I should get them away after few watering times more so I can stop using dimethoate.

Maybe then predator bugs can be used later. They should be used by letting few at the time around the collection cause most predators dies fast if food source ends for a while so they can't live and wait new patch of spider mites hatching from eggs. I just don't know how full of dimethoate spider mites(meal for another bugs) are cause they are resistant to it and eat cacti where dimethoate are systemic used. I think that is priority problem cause at the moment spider mites are toxic to predator bugs. ..very tricky situation.

Hope the neem oil I have paid already arrives from mail so I can start to use it. Before that I will keep using pyrethrin and try would it help even to keep them in control..

These two peyotes in the picture are actually only lophophoras what have got for some reason so ugly scars. Another lophs have scars but much less than these two. I hope I can do something. Cause of I am lazy I don't have maked tobacco tea yet to use nicotine too. I have used to few cactus plastic bag filled with tobacco smoke, don't know if it helps but think there is no harm done cause of that.

Tomorrow is new day and I start looking different cacti with magnifying class and try look
if spider mite population is reduced. Pyrethrin should be able to kill spider mites but it needs to sprayed several times around the collection before results can be seen. I don't have worried about spider mites before cause usually they have been in control.. That's why I suspect new more resistant spider mite population has arrived. Well.. nature can be a bitch sometimes.. .

I've recently been having really good feedback from customers using sponosad for mite control. It's a newer organic control that is much less likely to burn than neem (or so it seems). Works well on lots of different chewing pests too. There's a few companies making their versions of it these days. The one I'm familiar with is Bonide's "Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew" but green light makes one, and probably Monterey too.

I think neem-oil starts to help soon. I have given it with water at last friday, after that I have only sprayed lophophoras but don't have give moisture to roots. In this climate too much moisture kills lophophora easily. Few ariocarpus and lophophora has rotten before so I have to keep moisture every night by spraying. Maybe in few days I can water them again with neem-oil water.

Atleast I don't have seen any new scars forming to lophs but still many of them are very ugly. Only time will make them nice again. Atleast one peyote has starting make flower bud few days after neem-oil spraying and watering. :awesome:

Mosly_Harmless:
You said it will take time with neem to get cycle of spider mites break and so on? If you have experience about this, can you say how long it takes with neem-oil when results can be seen and no new scars are formed to lophs what these spider mites are infecting.

Neem-oil is new to me but I think I have made progress with it cause I have every night sprayed cacti with neem-oil water and give neem-oil with watering too.

Neem-oil product what I have are very viscous product. Only at warm it is easy to measure. At below 20C temperature it goes almost solid. Smell is actually very nice when compair it to chemicals. I think this kind of product are good and pure neem-oil?:tongue2:
