Not only was it a UK thing, I think it was localised to Oxford in the late 80's.

There's a word that has been popular in New England since I was a kid, and will probably never be out-of-style there, but anywhere else in the world, "wicked" is corny as hell.

Mid-state maybe. (I know everything north of Yonkers is upstate to some people). However, even parts of Vermont I wouldn't consider to be very New Englandy, specifically the northwestern corner along lake Champlain. If the Vermont side of the lake may not be New England, then the NY side certainly isn't.
