Swag actually means "secretly we are gay."

I think I've only used jabroni once (now twice), so I'm not sure what you mean.

I wish I could remember all the retarded phrases people would repeat from wrestling in the 90s.  I didn't watch it so I often felt left out when people were quoting their catch phrases.

I can only imagine two situations in which the word "swag" turned into some sort of confluence.

Having swagger used to mean (to my knowledge) a manner in which a person presented themselves either in their clothing or the way they moved.

Swagger turns into swag, which is basically free shit. You can sport some swag to add to your swagger in a fashionable way.

However, as things like t-shirts and ballcaps would be tossed into crowds to promote records or baseball teams, it likely turned into the "shit we all get". I'm sure some of it had to do with urban areas, like free shit you can get just by going to a show.

I've never turned down a free lunch or a free shirt.

So it depends. The Rat Pack had some swagger, but right now I'm wearing a Guinness shirt that I got on Saint Patty's day years ago.

Jabroni

I thought they invented the word for this episode. I had no idea it was a wrestling thing.
We are etymology's bitches tonight.

To be honest.  Still used a lot, it's just annoying even though I occasionally say it along with "honestly."
Like a lead Zeppelin.  Been trying to necromance this one back into use for a few years.  No luck so far

I used this one the other day.

When I thought about it. I honestly can't think of what the fuck it even means.

It makes sense if you look back far enough on the usage of square.

Here's an answer I found that makes sense:

Quote:
These days, calling someone a square is just another way of saying they're unhip or "not with it." However, the definition used to be a lot different.
According to Phrase Finder, a square used to mean "an honest or direct person." The expressions "fair and square" and "square meal" are likely offshoots. The shapely saying didn't take a turn for the nerdy until the 1920s.

World Wide Words explains that during the '20s, people who didn't dig jazz were sometimes called squares. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk actually adopted the middle name "Sphere." Later, after World War II, the word took on its current, more broad definition, as in "Sheesh, that guy's such a square." The etymology experts believe the word's meaning changed gradually from honest to "boringly conventional."

The expression "Be there or be square" is sort of a half-joking ultimatum that works because it rhymes. It probably originated in the U.S. during the '40s or '50s and was made popular by the whole James Dean "Rebel Without a Cause" vibe, which preached that being square was about as uncool as you could get.

Some more phrases/idioms:

Off the chain
Beast mode (I still use it)
I think "epic fail" has been overused to the point where it could be added to this thread.
Fo sho
All of a sudden.  I really prefer suddenly these days though when I was younger I used the former more often, probably to boost that word count for assignments.
Happy camper
I don't give a rat's ass
Willy nilly
Balls to the wall
According to my calculations
Yadda yadda yadda
Same difference :shakefist:
Open/closed-minded.  Mostly just because they're used as an ad hominem in arguments

Many of those are not out-of-style, as much as they are less frequently used. I do always get a "kick out of" seeing the things that "yank your chain."

This thread isn't a place for you to "get your Edison on" and "run it up the flagpole."
Or, is it?

I meant the things you highlight with  :shakefist: or make an entire thread about. These idiosyncrasies are the reasons you are my favorite poster.

no way. "gay" will never go out of style.

know why? Gay people suck... and when people use "gay" like that its just a synonym for "something that sucks"

it all makes sense :ancientaliens:
