Making Soap

I'm thinking of making soap.  Has anybody tried it?  I just made a couple loaf soap boxes and am about to order some oils and such. But before I do I wanted to know what are some of your favorite soaps?  Their are so many I really don't know which recipe to use.  I want a really good smelling one that cleans as well.  I will be using the cold process btw.

All I know about making soap comes from Fight Club, but that does sound pretty cool now that I think about it :thumbup:

haha, that's what I first thought of as well when I decided to venture into this.  I have not seen any recipe calling for glycerin though, I believe the most volatile ingredient I will be working with is lye.

My friend makes soap. I like goats milk the best it's more creamy than others. Lavender and vanilla are my fav smells, some of the more earthy ones are to strong for my liking.

Another thing about making soap is that it is an EXCELLENT front for synthing many illegals.


Between that and professional/hobby film developing, you have a legitimate reason to buy all sorts of oils and salts (respectively) that are usually suspicious to buy

I don't know where you are, but that feller is a schedule 1 substance in the US. It is not an oil in the context of soap making — saponifiable esters of a fatty acid and glycerol. Fortunately, nature doesn't give a shit about DEA regulations:

I was just talking about like scents and different body oils :shrug: you don't need a lot to make soap unless you want it really smelly

I didn't know my photography chemicals were useable for synthing drugs.  o_O  Not really wanting to try to use them for drugs anyway, something about film developer doesn't sound tasty.

The age of chemical based photographic processes is coming to a close. I work in the graphics and imaging field, and just about the only chemical based imaging left is in prepress.

Nah it isn't.  As far as Film development goes yes, but as far as paper processing goes, I think they still use chemicals on light sensitive photographic paper for professional quality images.  At least when I worked at a photo processing lab that's how it worked.

I dunno. The printers they are making these days are pretty sweet. The problem with traditional film is how not-foolproof the process is and it is very expensive. There will always be a niche market, of course.

The quality of light printed sensitive paper has another advantage as it's not printed via DPI on certain printers (especially if using film).  This is why professional photographers opt to have their pictures printed this way vs a printer.  Printers are catching up but still most are dependant on a DPI.


Again it's been a few years since i worked at the photo lab, so technology might have changed but that's how it was in the mid 2000's.

You are correct that imaging paper has a higher "resolution" than the output from a printer. It is an analog process, but it doesn't have an unlimited resolution. The grains of the light sensitive materials are not too different than pixels. In the larger formats, the old ways still have the advantage, but the CCD sensors have overtaken the smaller formats like 35mm film, except maybe in the lowest ISO ratings. Film is vastly more expensive, less sensitive to light and now has a lower resolution. I can't see how it will continue to exist. And, once the front end of the process is all digital, the detail in the final print will depend on digital pixels and DPI.
