Lol no worries man, I've been to several people's homes. And yes, great food. Ugh, yeah it's just so nice here. So many shopkeepers have smoked me down, whether I buy something or not.

Yeah it's always nice.
Their English is quite good. I mean, some people speak none at all, but I'd say around 50% of the people are just about fluent, with another 30% being able to say basic commands.

Not sure really. I'm checking the cost to extend my flight. I'm sure it's not too much. I'm thinking I'll know in 2-3 weeks though, whether I want to get back to my home life in a month or keep traveling for 2.

Pretty much anywhere you travel you will be surprised at how much english people know, its one of the dumb things that holds people back so often from traveling.

Go to small town michigan man (i'm from michigan) and you will see hospitality just like that in india though, I know its different but its more of a distrust city folk have for random people more than people being outright mean on purpose.

I'm sure I would be culture shocked like crazy.

I feel like I should post this here. It's not directly about my travels, but it relates to being in India.
Every night, I go to sleep listening to the Grateful Dead - I've done this every night for the past 18~ months, and plan on doing it forever. Anyway, last night I was playing 12-02-73, a pretty amazing concert played in Boston. Well, I forgot to charge my iPod during the day, and during Row Jimmy, it turned off. The last lyrics before it turned off was "You ain't got half of what you thought you had." I don't believe in fate, or a higher power; I realize this was purely coincidental. Nevertheless, it got me thinking quite a bit.

I am lucky in a sense - I was born to well educated, and high earning parents. They bought me a nice car when I turned 16, have always helped financially if I wanted something, and, well, funded this entire trip I am on right now. I thank my parents almost daily for this, and I do not, by any means, take this for granted. Today I have been here for 2 weeks, and only 1/4th into my trip, it's clear to me that money is an illusion; a distraction. Yes, money is very much a necessity, and I would not want, for a second, to live in poverty. What some of you may not realize, though, is that poverty in America is equivalent to, at the very least, a comfortable life here. America has its citizens caught in a trap, true of any other capitalistic nation. You need money to buy things, and need more things and more things, because we love things! In America, we have no deficiency of things, but a lack of just about everything else. What do you know about your neighbor, the next guy over, and the next? You probably know what things he has, and little else. He probably went to college, got a degree so he could acquire a lot of things, works 9-5, comes home tired, but is reinvigorated by the fact that this weekend, when he has some time off, he could go buy things. And he will be happy when he buys things, but it is only an ephemeral feeling no different than a drunken night, or watching a TV program. This is happiness to the working man of the States. (This is a generalization and is more true of the middle-upper class, not so much of rural towns)

In India, money is scarce. You are either making a lot of money, or you make quite a small amount. Sometimes food, too, is scarce; but the poor rest assured that if their neighbor comes across some money, that he will happily only fill his stomach halfway, to help feed his fellow man. They will buy their village a meal before they consider buying electronics, or a cool pair of shoes. In my upbringing, this sense of camaraderie is unseen. Of course, there's no struggle for food and other basic necessities, but that's not my point.
Actually, search The Paradox of Our Age and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Before posting this, I acknowledge the irony that it took quite a bit of money, to get to India, to realize how much of a distraction money is; but if I would have sailed here in a dinky ship, I still would have received the same message. There are many people in this specific town, McLeod Ganj, who come here for a week and are here decades later. There's an energy, and a sense of peace and camaraderie that connects monks with Atheists, Pakistanis with Indians, and poor beggars to the reluctant shopkeeper, that, in my experience, is found nowhere else.

I would say that you are drawing conclusions with a limited number of data points; Wealthy and cloistered vs. impoverished and engaged. I dont think you can blame weath, or credit the lack of wealth for what you see. Or, at least, wealth isn't necessarily an impediment to better communities. It just takes better people. Please don't get too jaded about your home.

This past summer, we had a very bad storm and the power in my parents neighborhood was out for eight days. That situation changed the dynamic in their neighborhood. Everybody was out, helping everyone else. My mom met people who have been neighbors for years, for the first time. The power came back on, and the moment slipped away. The problem in our culture is rabid individualism. This may appear as the never ending search for more, but I think its core is the pride that you never need to ask anyone else for help.

One more thing: the Paradox of the Age doesn't seem all that wise if you aren't a white, heterosexual, Christian male.

It's not they're happier as a result of less money - it's that they could still be happy without a new gadget every week. People get distracted in the search for riches and lose touch with everything else. Your peer is no longer a friend, but your enemy who you must outdo on every level, or else they'll take your job. Rabid individualism is indeed a problem, but I think that comes as a result of the want for more, that puts people against each other. Why do people have so much pride that they can't ask their fellow man a question? Because it makes them appear weaker to their "competition". I have the utmost respect for the rich who provide for the poor, and give money back to their communities. Again, having money doesn't necessarily mean you're self absorbed; but that many people who are self-absorbed with no regard for their peer or neighbor is lost in search of buying happiness

E: I don't see why you think it only applies to heterosexual, Christian, males, or whites at that? Are you reading the Dalai Lama's work? That's the one I'm speaking about. It applies to anybody who is self absorbed with no regard for anybody else

I phrased that badly, but my point was that there are a lot of people who haven't been able to participate in society the way they can now. To them, the rhetorical longing in the piece is probably somewhat bittersweet.

Honestly, the essay is three whiny paragraphs — there doesn't seem to be a single tangible prescription to alleviate any of the ills. There is a lot of "power of suggestion" being wielded, as well: is it true that we have shorter tempers? Or less wellness? Are viewpoints narrower, or do we actually have a much wider view that happens to expose the extremes? I think the Dalai Lama would do a better job if he actually wrote something like this, because he didnt write the essay. (At least, according to snopes)

Quote:
The true author of the piece isn't George Carlin, Jeff Dickson, the Dalai Lama, nor is he anonymous. Credit belongs with Dr. Bob Moorehead, former pastor of Seattle's Overlake Christian Church. (He retired in 1998 after 29 years in that post). The essay appeared under the title "The Paradox of Our Age" in Words Aptly Spoken, Dr. Moorehead's 1995 collection of prayers, homilies, and monologues used in his sermons and radio broadcasts:

Just to be certain we are talking about the same essay:
Quote:
We have taller buildings but shorter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints; we spend more but have less; we buy more but enjoy it less; we have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, yet less time; we have more degrees but less sense; more knowledge but less judgement; more experts, yet more problems; we have more gadgets but less satisfaction; more medicine, yet less wellness; we take more vitamins but see fewer results. We drink too much; smoke too much; spend too recklessly; laugh too little; drive too fast; get too angry quickly; stay up too late; get up too tired; read too seldom; watch TV too much and pray too seldom

.

Have fun out there, buddy!!!

It's not exactly what I read, but quite similar. If you go to google images, you'll see the words attributed to the Dalai Lama, but clearly inspired by the feller you talk about.

Do you consider the Dalai Lama to be a religious figure? Or political, or spiritual? What do you find appealing about him? I'm just curious. I really don't know much about him, and I have always dismissed him because he was born (selected a birth) into his role. Why is he not just the exiled heir of a slightly modified patrilineal monarchy?

Are you asking me what I think he is or what he really is? He's a religious leader. I am neither spiritual nor religious though, and frankly I'm not too involved in his politics either. I am also against the notion of picking a religious leader at the age or 2 or whatever it is, but they definitely picked the right person this time around. I look up to him because of who he is as a person. He's calm and collected in the face of adversity. And like me, he holds kindness and happiness above absolutely everything, including the religion he is the highest figure of. Search his quotes and teachers, it's hard not to like him

Wow man it sounds like you're having a great time and quite possibly learning things about yourself while you're at it. I've always wanted to do something like you've done...I told my parents before that I would like to travel to India and they kind of gasped, and are like "by yourself?". You said you're 18 right? Is this your first time travelling alone like this? I'm pretty curious about that aspect of it..were you nervous and such?

A great time, indeed; and likewise to learning a bit about myself.
Yes, I'm 18, and while I've traveled alone for a couple weeks in the states, this was my first trip out of the continent, and obviously first time alone out of the continent. Was I nervous? Not at all. My brother did Europe for 3 weeks as his gap year trip, and he was shitting bricks the week before. I truly wasn't nervous, but I was pumped as fuck.
As a female, you'd be advised to cover all of your goodies and be careful - some people advise females not to travel alone, but I've met quite a few solo female travelers and none had any trouble. If you want to travel alone, and you're confident you'll be alright, fucking go for it. This is the best decision I've ever made, and I think you'd feel the same way when you're done (or 25% done like me :smilingpuppy: ). Just get very very high for the long flight BECAUSE IT FUCKING SUCKS!

yeah i've always wanted to travel alone like that, maybe i'd be better of trying it out in the states first though. i would feel more confident with someone traveling with me, but what are the chances of finding someone who i'd like to travel with whose schedule matches up with mine enough to make it work? it would also terrify my parents if i traveled alone
