    #1767571 - 07/31/03 09:55 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Is there any way to test a substance for mescaline?

Maybe something similiar to a marquis reagent or something.........

Worth looking into...

to test specificaly for mescaline would no doubt be dificult and beyond the scope of most peoples home chemistry adventures.

there's not a "home kit" or anything if that's what you are wondering.

Lol....true there is no 'home test kit'......

Still though...im sure there is a way......and this is what im saying.....if you have a cacti you suspect to contain mesc. or other actives.....there must be a basic test to ID these molecules......say run the sample through TLC....but then what? would you test with something like the marquis test or what?

Anyone know how the 'Pros' do it?

Hi,

you would need to do an extract (acid/base) and run on a TLC (thin layer chromatography for the ones who wonder ;-)) against a known sample of pure Mescaline. You can find the running agent easily in many books and you can use Dragendorff to colour the alcaloids and compare the heights in the layer (a UV light comes also handy).

Colour tests are not very secure, because coulours are very subjective. Unless you use more than one colouring agent, you wont be sure if it is Mescaline or if it is a Mescaline-like compound.

I personaly like the above mentioned method the best, because of its simplicity:
"i have heard that eationg the cactus will let you know."

I mean, not everything that conatins Mescaline will contain enough to trip and will be worth of eating/extracting...
